Forums IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ PhotoReading, Memory Optimizer How do you review?

As I am new to photoreading, I want to make sure I understand all of the steps to get them right. Since I do not yet know how to photoread, I have been taking some extra time reading each step in the photoreading book.

Right now the only question I have is about the review step within the preview stage. I understand surveying and I understand getting the trigger words. But the book doesn’t really explain how to review (albeit I only have the 3rd edition). It talks about assessing what we’ve gained from surveying and trigger words but it doesn’t tell us anything else.

It says when reviewing to avoid getting into text too deeply too soon. It also says to resist the urge to stop previewing and start reading for details. So, are we supposed to be skimming or reading during the review stage? If not, why does it caution us about reading too deeply or reading for details?

I assume there was something additional involved because we pull about 20-25 trigger words for a book, yet beginner photoreaders take about 5-8 minutes to review. What are we doing during those 5-8 minutes?

It sounds a lot like supereading and of course postviewing is similar except for the formation of questions. Can anyone tell me exactly how to review during the preview stage? The book is lacking in this section.

Hi Jeremy.

Your preview should be 5 to 8 minutes. You definitely do not want to go beyond 8 minutes. When you start going past 8 minutes you get into the trap of just regular reading.

There is plenty of time to do plenty of numerous superreading and skittering passes later. It sounds based on what i am hearing that skittering might work better for you. Skittering involves reading the first sentence of the paragraph then allowing your eyes to bounce all over the paragraph to get the meaning from the words that are related to the main premise of the paragraph.

Purpose is everything in photoreading. Be real clear on what your purpose is and what you want from the book.

Don't forget your mind-map. Mind-maps are a great way to help you activate a book.

Previewing look at every 10th or twentieth page. That means randomly flick a few pages, they will number something between 10 and 20. Notice the structure of the book, places of interest, style of writing and layout. That applies for both previewing and postviewing. You are never trying to comprehend what the book is about only building curiosity and a desire to know more. As soon as you want to start reading close the book and let it incubate and ponder your mind probing questions.

Keep previewing even shorter than suggested in the 3rd edition. 90 seconds. that only gives you time to glance over the table of content and look at the front and back cover. Identify the genre of the book and then PhotoRead. Do the surveying, pulling trigger words and form questions during postview which can be roughly 12 minutes long. Again when you want to start reading, stop, You've prepared enough for the activation step.
