Hello Sangha,
You can do meditation either before or after. It is somewhat personal, and sometimes varies on personal needs (for example, I sometimes meditate first, then do active exercise qigong, then meditate some more. Other times, I start with an hour or more of active exercise and then do meditation).
If you are going to meditate, the best meditation for Spring Forest Qigong is either the Small Universe meditation (that is the very best) or the "Self-concentration" guided meditation (or one of the many variations of this such as the Spring Forest Qigong meditation that is in the Euphoria home study course, but which I downloaded as bonus when getting Marci Shimoff's new book HAPPY FOR NO REASON. Or Master Lin's "Butterfly Meditation" from the SFQ Center).
Master Lin has designed meditations that best go with the energy of Spring Forest Qigong. These meditations are in fact qigong, but qigong that uses the mind more while keeping the body still. Other forms of meditation might be best done either 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after SFQ (in other words with a 30 minute "buffer" zone in between the two practices).
However, in most cases, it might be a case of "good, better, best": in other words, if you have a meditation practice that you already like a lot and need to do SFQ right after, it might not be best, but it could very well be good "enough".
If you can't give the 30 minute "buffer" after meditation (in other words, you need to do the SFQ exercises right after meditating your form of meditation, whatever it is), try waiting at least 10 minutes or even 5. But if you can't even do that, then just meditate, do SFQ right after and then see how you feel. Try it for a few days and see what happens. Maybe try reversing it and see if that is better or worse.
Still, I think the best meditation either before or after doing Spring Forest Qigong active exercise is the Spring Forest Qigong meditations, either Small Universe or one of Master Lin's guided meditations.
Hope that helps!
blessings,
Steve
