Hi GUys,

Whos an experienced successful photo reader out there whos come to understand the material he's photo read? I've been going at this for several years now and I'm not getting ANYWHERE!! its pretty discouraging if not depressing. I'm back in school and my workload on reading hasn't come to a head just yet but I'm nervous. I got the homestudy course w/cd's in order to be able to read and comprehend material in a short time frame. To date, after doing stating the purpose, prviewing, fotofocusing, superreading/dipping mapping etc. I've gotten nowhere. I'm coming to the conclusion that either the program doesn't really work or that I have somne type of disfuncitonal other than conscience mind that will not take in information the way it supposed to normally.

I read articles going down the colum in 15-20 sec's and can't begin to tell you what i've just read. This is a serious problem and I'm sure others maybe having the same mental block as I am with this approach I'm starting to feel is very LABOROUS and difficult to use.

Please help me figure out what the heck is wrong with me. I am really depressed about this. AM I DESTINED TO BE A STUPID SLOW READER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE? Being a good reader and a fast reader spells the difference in how successful financially someone can be and how quickly they can achieve that. THe idea that I cannot read fast enough to help me propel to the next level of my education and carreer is really devistating to me.

Please help!!!

First, for the purpose of full disclosure: I do have this PR course, and have studied it at least once through all the way. But I not even close to being a real "master" of this system and really want to practice more.

Also, for better or worse (as far as your problem is concerned), I inuitively already used some of these techniques and have always been a very fast reader. One of the ways I am fast, is discovered as an undergrad (for my second time in my 30's, twenty years ago), that I really almost never have to read every word. Once I liberated myself from thinking that I have to read every word, my reading speed for classes etc, more than tripled. The other, students would stay up all night studying for a test or an assignment and I would spend about an hour or less sometimes on the same material. My "secret"?

Well, no secret at all and I told them at the time: I rarely read all of it. I just learned to kind of "feel" what I was reading for--sometimes it was really to master some material, sometimes it was just to get what the teacher wanted (which was rarely the same thing).

This is a big part of the PR Whole Mind system: it is not so much about "reading", as learning. And that happens by liberating oneself from the idea that every word is important. It helps one read by kind of feeling (through the different steps and layers of the system) the important words and skipping many others.

Having said that, I can still feel your pain, so to speak, and I think part of it comes from conditioning that we all have. Fear, anxiety, and a lot of left-brained conditioning, can hinder us from reaching our full potential. So it is often not about the amount of time, or how hard we try, but "blocks" that are there from the culture, our teachers (past and present), peers, etc.

One thing that comes to mind is not to "try harder", but rather to "try easier". The problem is, THIS IS NOT SO EASY!

Or rather, it can often seem easier to say than to do.

One thing that can help is hypnosis, NLP, or tools like the Paraliminals. Writing affirmations can help. But one really has to either visualize what one writes, or really think it hard. Write at least 10 times every day: "Photoreading is easy for me. I learn and master material quickly depending on my needs."

This affirmation does not depend on preconceived (and often unrealistic) goals, such as "I will know everything in this 300 page book in the next 24 hours". That goal is usually not only unrealistic, it is often unnecessary. It is very rare in ANY kind of material, for any purpose, that you need to "know" everything in a long piece (or even a short piece) of material.

So refining purpose is key. There are often times the only purpose is to pass a test. For many classes and for many business meetings, assignments etc, this MUCH LESS, than the material that is being assigned (either by someone else or self-assigned).

This too can be addressed through meditation, hypnosis, NLP etc. Affirmations again can help. You have to write from 10-20 times every day, something along the lines of "I am excellent at pinpointing my purpose for any reading material. I know exactly what to skip, what to focus on, what to remember and what to let go of".

Again, so much of our obstacles in these areas is our own conditioning. Belief can be key. But the great thing about belief, is you can program it.

It does take some practice though.

Chunyi Lin teaches about visualizing that goes something like this: "Visualize. If you can't visualize, pretend you can. If you can't pretend, lie!" .

This is actually a very profound teaching and one that can help a lot with PR.

Don't write, or say anymore "AM I DESTINED TO BE A STUPID SLOW READER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE?" I am sorry, but if you really want to master something as different as PR from the way most of us are taught to learn, you have to be very tough on yourself--not on how many hours or months or years you practice, as you have been doing, but rather one WHAT YOU TELL YOURSELF and what you allow your mind to dwell on.

I know this can seem difficult at first. But the good news, is if we are diligent, it really does get easier and easier.

And at first, you may have to "lie". This is only a figure of speech, but the point is, at first (and for you, I realize this no longer "at first", but the principle still applies. Maybe even more so!), it may feel like a lie.

You can no longer use any language that hints at failure. I realize that in our so-called "rational" and so-called "scientific" bias, that saying something when we (at least at first) don't believe it can feel forced or phony.

Tough.

You have to do it anyway.

What do you have to lose? Nothing! Except a few habits and ingrained ideas about "lies" and "truth".

You must keep telling yourself that PR is easy for you. That you are a fast learner and that you can master any material in whatever time you need and want for a specific purpose (again, THIS IS KEY! This is not about reading vast amounts of material just "because". It is not about being an "athlete" of reading. That is part of the "old mindset" of "speed reading" etc. This is more about mastering what YOU need for WHAT YOU NEED IT FOR. And that can often --no always-- be a LOT less than you think -- or even what the book, the boss, the teacher or whom or whatever would have you believe.

And then do the steps again. All the while telling yourself that you are getting it, that you in the state, that you are getting exactly what you need, no more and no less.

Tell yourself that you got it when you are done.

If it didn't work, you need to "lie better". The part of you that resists (and we all have this), is still saying either "this can't work! I have to read every word. There is too much to learn! Etc etc etc" Or, "This can work but not for me. I am too ...whatever"

No. This DOES work for you.

You have improved more than you realize.

You must "fool" the conscious mind. You must lead it into submission. Keep telling yourself, "I will only listen to my higher self" Tell your subconsious mind this before you go to sleep, when taking a shower, whenever you remember: "Subconsious mind, only listen to my higher self (thanks to Sonia Choquette and her book TRUST YOUR VIBES). We are learning and mastering PR!".

Don't give up! The conscious mind WILL eventually submit and go along.

Visualize. If you can't or it isn't working, tell yourself that it is. Pretend. "Lie!" .

After awhile, it will not be a "lie". You will be doing it. This is something you can do and in fact are already doing, but you just don't know it yet. Or rather you didn't. Now you do.

Anyway, I hope this helps you.

Helped me!

Usually when activation doesn't work you're not clear on your purpose.

That means when you start activating you don't know what you want to find out from the author.

Next problem is most people feel that because they don't get anything in the first 20 minute activation pass they cannot do it and give up.

The thing is you need to keep going adding the next activation pass and then the next and the next until it gelled. If you do as many activation passes with a purpose and mind probing questions you will finish the book in 1/3rd the time of traditional reading.

You must be asking mind probing questions on each activation. If you don't have questions don't bother. You're just passively reading.

The next problem is people try to rush the learning PhotoReading by using it on their school book. Of course they have a lot riding on their school text so fear of not getting it all and the fact that learners always try to learn quickly by saying to themselves, I don't need to "write" down trigger words, I'll just skip that, I don't like mind mapping so I won't do that. I don't have time to mind probe so I'll just start activating and see what I get. And their purpose is to know everything in the book (That's not a purpose by the way.)

So they work on their school work worried they will miss something, try to short cut the system and then when they realise they are spending the same time trying to learn their school work as they would without PhotoReading (some are actually spending more time learning because they have in the past actively avoided studying and hope PhotoReading will make it a 5 minute breeze where they usually didn't open the textbook at all), they cry foul.

Many people will spend 20 minutes activating and say they got nothing from the book and yet they will spend 20 minutes passively reading 15 pages of 200 page book and be okay with the fact they got nothing because they are only up to page 15.

If you want to success you need to become active. If you want to learn the system quickly do all the steps don't skip anything. I know some of the things seem mundane even look like they don't mean anything. But there is a reason they all train the body and mind to be active in reading.

Also learn the system on a book away from school work. Once you have it working on 3 books you can work it on school work.

After learning PhotoReading I took an intensive course. It is usually a 2 year part time program or 1 year full time. They had intensified it to 6 weeks. 4 weeks we were required to be present for full day lectures and the next two weeks we had to prepare our assignments.

I was ready to hand in the assignment 10 days early. While my classmates were working long hours on it I didn't do much. I mucked around designing business cards for them. One class mate had a computer disaster and lost all his contacts (he didn't want to lose Kylie Minogue's phone number) I fixed that for him. The instructor decided to challenge me because they refused to allow me to hand in my assignment. He asked me to come up with marketing ideas. I grabbed 10 books on marketing. Sat down and PhotoRead the stack, then mind mapped ideas that came up. I had 17 marketing ideas and wrote 1.5 pages in point form because it would have been 5 to 10 pages to write them all up and I was only supposed to produce half a page. It took me 35 minutes to PhotoRead and mind map. I typed it up in another 15.

It worked quickly because I had a purpose and asked mind probing questions. I knew what I needed to know and focused on my purpose.

How did you photo read 10 books on marketing in 35mins. If I understand mindmapping correctly its a lot like using a "brainstorming" type diagram, where you have the main point in the center illustrated as a "circle" then you have legs & adjoining circles branching out from that main circle to use as sub points. Is that correct? is that what mindmapping is?

If so then here is the problem I am having with using it on any particular book. The problem is:I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR IN A PARTICULAR BOOK OR PUBLICATION IN ORDER TO MINDMAP... fOR example, there is a book that I'm required to get for my first class in school called "the little brown compact handbook". Its basically a book to help you write better and format your writting or something like that. I've photoread this book about 5times already from cover to cover then went back to read the chapter the teacher told us to read and to this day I still dont know wht the heck i've read. How can I mindmap something that just isn't registering in my brain unconscience or other wise. I can't pull out trigger words because 1. don't know what the trigger words are within the text. 2. I'm supperreading or skittering so fast my eyes cant recognize trigger words useful to me that I might need. I'm also trying to read fast enough as to not to try and sound out words (subvocalize) as I read too, or trying to vocalize something else other than the words on the page that i'm reading. Even this is a bit difficult.

Don't get me wrong I've been practicing this stuff and I will continue to practice (I was actually practicing this for the most part of the afternoon and evening on saturday) but for me it really hasn't gotten me very far. I'm hoping something gives soon.

I want to make this work, but so far i've come to the conclusion that most of you guys that are blazing through books via photread, have either already read pretty fast to begin with and photoreading accellerated that, or you probably didn't have all the mental clutter in your head (as ive always had) to begin with so your able to take in the course and teaching far better than I and much faster.

Well thats my opinion and concern... Your thoughts please!!

I will keep doing this till I"m old and grey wether I figure it out or not..

I PhotoRead the books in about 10 minutes (roughly 2 minutes each) I mind mapped for about 10 minutes. My purpose was clear and I asked myself to ideas. I didn't SR&D or skitter. I just did a brain dump. I PhotoRead the books because I wasn't getting any ideas before.

Quote:

I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR IN A PARTICULAR BOOK OR PUBLICATION IN ORDER TO MINDMAP...

That's the reason for your problem in a nutshell.

No purpose so why are you even bothering with the course? (I mean the course the book is about)

Quote:

Its basically a book to help you write better and format your writting or something like that.

Is that what you got from the book? What mind probing questions did you form from the trigger words during post view?

• For clarifying your purpose why do you even want to bother with the book.

• If you're not recognising words during skittering you're not skittering

• Mind mapping is also for collating thoughts and ideas, taking notes in a short hand format that uses more of your intelligences.

• Learn the system first on subject away from school work

• Use the 5 day test on at least books not related to school work and make sure they fully gel. If they haven't check your purpose.

• Form mind probing questions from your trigger words and look at the questions you wrote down during activation. [didn't write them down? Then you missed an important part of the system.] If you don't have a question don't waste your time activating.

• Sort out your purpose. Why spend your precious time reading or even PhotoReading if you have no use for the knowledge?

• Textbooks are multiple books in one. Treat each chapter as a book in itself.

• Stop fooling yourself with the subvocalisation myth. Research shows you need to subvocalise to understand. You do *not* need to subvocalise every word to understand, just the important ones. So stop trying to stop subvocalisation it's obviously screwing up your comprehension. Also you are robbing yourself of understanding because you're more focused on technique than doing.

The other place you are blocking yourself from self talk... discussing and linking what you learn to prior knowledge.
Quote:

or trying to vocalize something else other than the words on the page that i'm reading.

What you are telling me is you're blocking your conscious mind and preventing the access to the body mind connection.

I've had many arguments with my mind while PhotoReading or activating. If I tried to block them I'd have never noticed that the answer was understood by me because it was within me.

I had posted experiences describing my self talk in 2002 they are still on the forum. The point is... pay attention to what is going on don't try to block it. That's trying to impose rules that are not even in the PhotoReading system.

You reduce subvocalisation by moving faster you don't eliminate it. I subvocalise, always have and always will. Just not every single word when activating. Just when I recognise there might be nuggets of information in the areas I dip. I may subvocalise 2 or three words. 5 words in a sentence or 15 to 50 words in a paragraph. For it to make sense subvocalisation is going to happen.
