hello ppl,
i am training to be a taxi driver in my town, for the knowledge test (in 2 weeks) i need to know things like: hotel -> what road, bar -> what road etc, there are 2 things linked to learn, so i cant see a way of using the anchorman list, can someone suggest some ideas to learn major routes, places etc in a town. I have made a list and been out cycling slowly past hotels etc

Have you ever seen a transit map that they make for train stops? They don't follow a surface map but can be colour coded for routes and then marking the stops. You can tell the next stop by the previous stop.

What if you could draw a circit of the route that has those stops (hotels, landmarks etc)?

Once you have done that you can link it to an ABC list.

not exactly sure what you mean, looking at a transit map of the london underground (england uk) i see all the colour coded routes but dont know what you mean by knowing the next station from the last one. i drew a route in paint shop pro but dont know how i can post it here, basically its a curved line with intersections, at the intersections there are hotels, i still dont understand how i can link a road to each hotel or use an abc list on this route. Please excuse my ignorance but i am new to this idea of learning.

Pick a starting point or central point from where you could start... that would be A on your ABC list E.G Train terminal at Wally Plaza is where you start out most of the time that would be A on your ABC list The Anchorman is now named Wally A = heres Wally. Passerger arrives wants to ride to the Pelican Watering hole (making up the names as I type) To get to this watering hole you need to take route 3 (you can have 3 or 4 or more ABC List as in head north, head south, head east, head west) The Pelican Watering Hole is after the Grasshopper Tower and Sleep EZ hotel, on the ABC list. You you will take the passenger to landmark 5 along that particular route.

What you are doing while learning is getting to know the major landmarks along a particular route using the ABC list to put them in the logical order that you would pass them. You are using the landmarks to become familar with the streets direction and order.

You might only have 3 probable destinations along one route but starting from "A" Wally Plaza you head to B which is right at the lights with the hat shop across the road. C you've connected to the Servo with the big flower there you need to get into the left lane because the traffic just crawls in the right D is the Macdonals you need to turn right at the next intersection after sighting that, E is the white house with the yellow picket fence you need to turn left there F is Grasshopper Tower. Keep going to G the Bowling club and turn left at that intersection. H is 4 traffic lights then turn right ... you'll find Sleep EZ midway along this street. I is watch out for the Brewery on the left you need to turn right and J is the Pelican Watering hole and you cant miss that either the green fish in the pelicans mouth is rather bold.

Naturally if you are learning it from the map you'd be counting traffic lights and intersections that you need to go through rather than having visual landmarks that comes with driving the routes.

That is just a suggestion from me you might find from that ideas to make it fit your memory style.

Alex
