The art of remembering is the art of thinking.

When we wish to fix a new thing
in either our own mind or a pupil's,
our conscious effort
should not be so much to impress and retain it
as to connect it with something else already there.

The connecting is the thinking;
and,
if we attend clearly to the connection,
the connected thing will certainly be likely
to remain within recall..

Like the post says, I wish he'd been my teacher at school lol.
Problem is, he was around a hundred years before I started school.

I'm just glad of the internet and people at LSC who are communicating and consolidating all of this great knowledge.

Thanks!

hi flex, i understand the concept you talk about but applying it to my latest learning objectives seems almost impossible, i am learning my towns places/roads/routes etc, and cant see a way of tying in places with roads, like a hotel to a road, ive tried mind maps, abc lists that dont really make sense because there are too many gaps, eg: bath rd abc list -
B = burley court hotel

G = grosvenor hotel

H = hotel piccadilly

M = mayfair hotel

P = pavallion hotel

R = royal bath hotel
russell court hotel

thats the list for real, i have tried Alex's suggestion in previous post to no avail. Dont get me wrong i am learning these roads, just wish i could apply some MO techniques rather than blatent repetion (which is working, albiet slowly)

seems almost impossible

It's either easy, or it is impossible,is the attitude to have.Most things are possible, therefore using the correct techniques, are easy.

Of course getting to that point is not always easy, but once you get there, it will be.

So you need to associate the hotels down certain streets.In your example we have Bath Street, with those particular hotels mentioned situated there.

- How about thinking of a 'burly' man who couldn't squeeze himself into the 'bath'

- I just googled around to find references to Grosvenor.I found this website
It seems that there's a major company in the world called Grosvenor, who specialise in cleaning.So maybe imagine that some people from Grosvenor came around to clean your bath, it would shine brilliantly clean.
I know you'll think, well how will I remember that Grosvenor is a cleaning company, well maybe have a look on there website, read a bit about them.You'll be acquiring new general knowledge at the same time.
Or maybe think the bath was 'gross' it hadn't been cleaned in ages.
'Gross' kind of rhymes with 'Grosvenor,'
Grosvenor is the cleaning company, and they've come to clean your 'bath'
It seems like a lot of stuff to remember, but once you make the connection, your inner mind works at light speed compared to your conscious mind, so it'll be instanly recalled.

For Hotel Piccadilly, you could take the syllable 'Picc' and associate it with being 'Picky'
Mrs Marple was very 'Picky' and insisted that her Hotel had a 'bath' and not showers.

Maybe for 'Pavillion' you could use the Pavillion end at the Oval Cricket ground.I don't follow cricket but it's the first thing that just came into my mind to associate with Pavillion.I think it's an end of the ground where the crowd or players sit, I'm not sure.
Anyway maybe if you imagine a cricket ground and maybe hear the commentator say:
"by heck it's a hot day today, I'm not surprised the crowd in the pavillion end are all sitting in cold baths."
Then picture that scene.It's absurd, but it's irrelevant whether it makes sense or not.

For the last two R's I can think of the Queen getting rid of her Corgies, and opting for a Jack Russell dog.The Jack Russell was now 'Royalty' and was cleaned in a 'Bath'
I can picture a Jack Russell with a crown on it's head, splashing around in a bath in regal surroundings.

Now these are from my memory web, so don't for one moment feel guilty if they make no use to you whatsoever.My point in this post is to show you how you can use the countless threads already within you, in order to learn new things.
You have to do this yourself however, I can merely guide you, but it's your brain and your unique memory web which you have to explore.

You have to become more aware and notice how things interrelate.If something works for you, as in helps you construct, then it works!
Simple as that!

I personally have stopped questioning associations that come into my head.
For instance in my example earlier, I said that I don't particularly follow Cricket, yet obviously I must have threads in my web for that association with Pavillion to show itself.
I don't say to myself:
"oh I can't use that because I don't follow Cricket and I won't remember it"

Instead I said to myself:
"that was within me to use, I know I know it because it came to me instantly, it's in my memory web therefore I shall use it"

If you'd like, you can give me your msn messenger address and talk to you there.
I can spare some time for you if you like, and I can show you how you can upload that image onto this website.

Thanks!

flex...wow, thank you for your prompt (and extensive) reply, i get the gist of what your saying, play with knowledge, i guess im like a lot of people in being very rigid in my thinking (although lately have been experimenting a lot with different learning techniques from here and mind mapping. I will
be starting my final year at university in a couple of weeks so this new way of learning is very important to me as i really struggled
to keep my head above water in 1st an 2nd year.

my msn is luigi4050@hotmail.com

please add me to your contact list

ok flex, this is what i came up with for bath rd
B = the burley man couldnt squeeze himself into the bath (burley court hotel)

G = those sexy cleaning ladies from grosvenor cleaning came over to clean my bath (grosvenor hotel)

H = that smell of onions & burgers walking along piccadilly leaves me feeling the need for a bath (hotel piccadilly)

M = i aways enjoyed having a luxurious bath at memos in mayfair (mayfair hotel)

P = they did not have baths at the school pavilion (pavilion hotel)

R = royal bath hotel = bath rd (i know this one)

The jack russell sat in pooh on the court carpet and so had to be 'bath'ed (Russell court hotel)

The only thing is how do i know i have gone through (mentally) the whole list when there is only a few, is this where the anchorman list comes in?

just thought i'de share my thoughts and hopefully help soemone else along the way, thanks for helping flex. Now im thinking how do i apply this to software/hardware engineering ? there must be a way :-)

The way I would remember is to put all of that into one single story.
So take the individual situations, ie, burly man in bath, the sexy cleaning women etc, and consolidate them into a journey/story.

So you could start by saying:

"The rather burly man couldn't fit into the bath when he went for one at memos in Mayfair.
Feeling embassrassed he decided to go for a walk to burn off some calories.He walked up by piccadilly, but the smell of the onions and burgers mad him feel in even more need of a bath.............

and so on.I won't complete it, I'll leave that up to you.Indeed what I've written so far is just a guide, to show you the principle.
The shorter you can get the story, the more concise, whilst at the same time integrating all the facts you need, the better!!!

Give it a go.

Making connections can be very simple.

Just free associate. You do not have to be aware of the class of association in order for an association to be there or be strong.

That is, you do not have to associate places with places. You do not have to rhyme. You do not have to associate pieces or syllables of words with other information.

Every subject, every word, every idea brings up associations. You merely have to find and reinforce links between what is new and not very meaningful to what is already stored and significantly meaningful.

You might simply ask, "What does this remind me of that is signficant to me? If I were to take this information very personally, what would I experience?"

That's a good, simple, yet profound memory suggestion, babayada. You phrased it nicely.

Flex, can you add me in to your contact list too. I live in Taiwan and it seems to me that I am the only one in Taiwan who has the course. Thank you very much. My msn account in my profile.

Hi all,

I am been listening the MO audiotapes I've just received and reading the booklet as well.

As one of my objective is to learn a psychology course about neurophysiology, I am a bit confused about ABC list, anchorman list and linkings.
Can you help me with your feed-back about the following assumptions ?

Let's say I need to construct my knowledge about VISION PROCESSES.
I understand that I'd better
1/ Establish my 26 items abc list, without any specific attention to my subject (?)
(as the generic "anchorman list"
2/ Collect all of my keywords about vision processes (< the course)
3/ If some of them are for me more important than others, assign to each of the keywords a digit
4/ Then combine as lively and surprisingly as possible (as it comes !) with the abc list words corresponding to the digit.
FOR INSTANCE : "rhodopsine" (keyword) would be n° 9, which is "I" and corresponds to "INVENTION" (abc list); so what "pops in" just now is that a genious scientist "RHODOLPHE PSY" in his bubbling and FLASHY (photopic conditions)laboratory has found out the way to decompose photoreceptors cells;
5/ If no logical order prevails, my combination becomes : Rhodopsine > "R" of my abc list, which stood for "RYTHME" , so what I can imagine is : Round the eye circulates, either fast or slow a red point into various channels, etc.

HOwever, when reading your insightful dialogue Flex and Luigi, I wonder whether the abc list is not a list that I hace to specially and carefully designed once and only once I have collected my keywords.
SO ??

Hope my English and explaining is OK.

THanks a lot.

Bertrand
