Over the past eight years I have been listening to hypnosis tapes by various people among which:

Glenn Harrold
Paul Scheele (Paraliminal series),
Paul McKenna
Thomas Budzynski
and more recently a Zapper CD with Dick Sutphen.

The great benefit of such tapes is that they're much cheaper than a hypnosis session with a hypnotherapist, and you can use them over and over again.

There are basically two different types, firstly the kind that give you direct suggestions, for instance "You are feeling at peace with yourself" after a short hypnotic induction, and the second kind where the suggestions are more inferred and indirect, and often come in the form of suggestive stories.

I have found both types to work for me. The Paraliminals even have a direct noticeable effect the same or the next day after just one session.

What can also happen though is through the sheer number and repetition of affirmations your mind gets overloaded. Then depending on your predominant coping strategy you might get depressed or be compelled to act out. This is especially a factor with the tapes that give direct suggestions I have found. But i have also felt unpleasantly overwhelmed after listening to some Paraliminals.

There are also people that say that if you know certain suggestions are not true for you (i.e "You feel confident and in control always") you will feel a lot of resistance which might actually result in the opposite attitudes being reinforced.

My best experiences are with the Budzynski and Paraliminal tracks. I was not really impressed with Dick Sutphen's stuff, it's very direct and not very subtle. Would like to hear your experiences.

I agree about Dick Sutphen. I find him too direct too and not relaxing at all. I have listened only to his tracks which can be downloaded for free.

The Paraliminals work for me.

Hypnosis is like deep relaxation for me as I have only done auto-hypnosis. I have never seen a hypnotherapist.
