Can you tell me about the activation techniques I should try and are there any new ones?

Also, which techniques are more effective, the materials they work best with?

I some times get a head ache whilst in the photofocus state am I doing it wrong?

I originally found myself getting headaches also. In my case, it was because I was staring through the spine so intently, trying to see the blip page. In trying to diverge my gaze, I think I was crossing my eyes. I finally started to relax and to focus on the outer edges of the text (left and right margins of the book). When I did that, the headaches went away and the blip page appeared effortlessly.

I used to feel kind of queasy when I first started photofocusing a large number of books. With practice I have grown to enjoy the process immensely. In fact, I find it highly relaxing.

You might find it useful to listen to tape 3 when you photoread. When I started out I used to bring my walkman to the bookstore and go through the whole process with Paul's help. By doing that in the beginning you will really get a feel for what a highly relaxed and productive photoreading session feels like. Then when you do the 3 to 1 method you will instantly go into state.

As far as activation techniques 'Direct Learning' is my favorite. I also 'Skitter' whole books if I am reading for recreation.

weight39doug,

I'd be interested in learning more about your skittering experience. I don't get much from reading the description in the third edition. Did you try different patterns before you found one that worked? Which pattern did you find most useful? Do you find it works better than super read/dip?

Yes I tried different eye patterns before I found the one I liked. I use a wavy eye pattern. Like this "~~~~~~" when skittering the lines.
