How does the experience of normally reading a novel compare to PR'ing, don't you lose the atmosphere you get when you get involved with a character?

Nope

You don't lose anything except the extra time it takes to read it.

I personally prefer to read novels the normal way because I enjoy sitting for long periods of getting involved in a story as opposed to blazing a speed trail through a good novel.

I've found that activating certain novels poses more problems than with technical material. I haven't as yet found a way to pull out the stuff I really need - well, I sometimes get pretty high hopes when trying this out - and it doesn't always turn out very successfully. Novels I found especially difficult are those long ones by Dickens (such as Our Mutual Friend) and postmodern novels (such as Morrison's Beloved). Well, I am trying some experiments with visualisation lately and I'll mail back if there are some developments.

It's recommended in the book that you should do a short preview, PhotoRead and then RapidRead novels. So far I've found that doing it this way is slow and boring. Essentially this is like reading a book the "ordinary way". I'm having a hard time to notice where there's a benefit of the PhotoReading step when reading novels.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to shorten reading time for novels? Right now it seems like the best idea I can think of is to learn some speed reading technique for this purpose.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
