Hey Jim,
I just started my PR course today after much anticipation. I too am in IT field and am very curious to see how PR techniques can be applied to programming. Being a consultant, I've learned the only way to stay marketable is to constantly learn new "black magic" technologies that nobody else has a handle on yet. Naturally one ends up constantly reading, studying, and applying these new technologies to refine ones skills.
Your description of how solutions to coding problems come to you while doing other tasks is so familiar. I've found that for me, anytime this happens I'm usually in the shower. I suppose since I'm relaxed in the shower, it's conduscive to these subliminal revelations.
A lot of times however, answers to coding problems came to me in my sleep. Every now and then after a particularly long day, in my dreams I would actually watch myself coding. And sometimes it would actually be a solution to a problem that had me stumped for long periods of time. Usually after such episodes I never felt rested, almost as if I had been working instead of sleeping.
Interesting stuff. I haven't gone far enough into the course yet to draw any parallels between these kinds of subliminal events and the exercises given on tape 1.
I hope you would post your results here on the forum and share with a fellow codemonkey your findings and any techniques we could try. In my current project, I'm responsible for daily code reviews of other programmers. I'd be curious to see if one could PR the code and draw upon experience in the language to notice any flaws when activating the material.
As I said, I just started the course. The first game you'll play involves PRing a dictionary for a few minutes, then concentrating on a word and visualizing where on the page in the dictionary that word is. To my surprise, I got around 2 out of 4 dead on, and one was pretty close.
Statistically could I have gotten those kinds of results? I don't know yet, but it certainly has increased my enthusiam about the course.
Keep me updated Jim! Let me know if you've the next Quake killer ready for beta testing =) Hey, maybe PRing is Carmack's secret
