You have to take all the time necessary until you "get" it, don't you?
Here's something I told someone else recently. It's worth repeating here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I try to change my purpose all the time and make it something specifically that I want from a book. Make it personal. It's kinda hard. Anything you come up with HAS to be right because this is YOU and this book we're dealing with and nothing else.
You mind probe to ask yourself what YOU want to know so when you look down the page you're drawn to answers. On a really cool book like Accelerated Learning you may want to rapid read it but on other books the other steps may be enough. In the end you'll understand what's important to you and either have the urge to rapid read it or NOT rapid read it. Most books aren't worth reading and PR will help you sift thru these types of books.
Your text book has to be studied, no way to avoid it. I'd run thru the steps and add study reading and MM's to burn it into memory.
Think of dipping as something you've done your whole life but now you're just calling it something. Ever pick up a magazine in the dentists office and just read the things that interested you? You didn't start a 12 page article because you knew you weren't going to be able to finish it so you just flipped and dipped thru the whole thing looking for whatever interested you. It's the same thing but now you have a purpose guiding you and mind probe questions to help too. When I read to 'see what's in the book' I sometimes preview and see that I'm not really interested in the book. If I am then I ask, "What would I do with the knowledge in this book after I read it?" Then do the steps normally. I only Mind Map what I'm really interested in remembering.
If your purpose isn't specific then you just have to read more. It's like this... if you have to go to the store for batteries and nothing else you can go and be done with it in no time at all. But if your just bored and want to go to the store to wander around and kill time and maybe buy something, you'll spend more time and maybe see something you didn't know you wanted. "I'll know when I see it" phenomena. Me photoreading the "Einstein Factor" book was like me running thru a store I was interested in and buying what I needed and running out- I felt like I missed something, I wanted both more detail and enjoyment so I rapid read it. When I photoread Diet books in the bookstore to just get the MAIN POINTS because I really don't care, I just want to know basically what they're saying- then that's like me running into a hardware store (they bore me to death) getting only what I need and running out. Time is saved in one area so it can be spent in another. In the end you end up reading more - BOTH of what you want and don't want (but have) to read. The whole "PHOTOREAD THEN ACTIVATE TO BUILD NEURO CONNECTIONS" is probably something that takes some time to build so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Be sure to get yourself really tense and be hard on yourself for not being perfect, and you'll do fine. Or is it....
