Brian,
Food for thought. Thanks for the reply. I remember when I took Martial Arts as a child they really focused on energy flow through the body and how to maximize and control it. As a child a lot of what they said was lost on me, I just wanted to learn how to kick some butt. Looks like the important lesson was missed, don't you think?

Paul,
Thanks for the words on "laziness". I carry no guilt for it and often revel in my ability to find shortcuts, "work smarter, not harder". Most don't work as anticipated, but enough do work to justify it. Anything that simplifies life is a plus. I have heard a quote that goes something like this, "life is ten percent of what happens to you and ninty percent of how you deal with it" Looking back at my life I can see a multitude of instances where this is true. Thanks again.

To All,

I have not used this program because I purchased Sound Forge, but it looks like it will accomplish what you need. Sound Forge is a pricey program that does everything. Thier site is at http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/
but beware of possible sticker shock. The best way to do this for most would be to mix your tapes on a dual cassette to your liking and then import it to your harddrive.

For those of you like me that will find any excuse to spend more time on your computer (a.k.a. lifeless) check out this program.
www.acoustica.com
Internet Audio Mix v1.48 (company quotes)
Whether you're a DJ or just creating cool mix CDs, this tool is for you! Mix MP3s, record your own, set volume fades and pans via a simple graphical interface! Its your soup. Mix it well! Exports to RealAudio™ and wave files. Fully Functional for 30 days! After 30 days, you will only be able to render WAVE and RealAudio up to 30 seconds. $21.95 to own
I can't personally speak to its effectiveness but it looks fairly comprehensive and if you like it the price is great!

I only recently sought out LSC and recieved the memory and genius tapes a few weeks ago. I have not had a lot of time to determine the effectiveness of this method of sleep programming. (Yes, I was joking about the 24/7 remark in my previous post) I wouldn't even consider such a strong course of action like that and wouldn't recommend it for any one. Sleep learning has worked for other topics in my education so I will use it here as well.
I found this paraliminal site by seeing the PR infomercial and ordered the PR book. It quickly became evident to me that my recall sucks...BIGTIME. So before I continue with PR training I want to focus on recall improvement. The excersize I use most is memorizing licence plate numbers and such. I've been doing this for five weeks now and have noticed an big improvement since recieving the memory tape.
When I lay down to goto sleep and I don't listen to the tapes I recall obscure moments from my childhood and try to really focus on the details instead of the general memory, what happened before the event and how it change my behavior afterwards. (Sometimes this sucks when I hit a memory that had a bitter impact, but this too is necessary to change I believe. As people make mistakes in thier life they often teach themselves how to forget (suppression) to cope with the strong emotions attached to the event...Guilty) This too has become easier since employing the paraliminals. It seems like I can review the memories with more detachment from the emotions. I would like to eventually piece together as much of my past as possible so I don't permenantly forget this stuff like my folks have.

My apologies for this being so long winded but I wanted to address all of your posts. If I have overlooked anything post it or feel free to email me. Have a good weekend!

Sincerly,
Jeff

Hey All,
I'm spending a goodly chunk of my weekend culling through data on sleep-learning. I checked out a book at the library called, "Learn While You Sleep" by David Curtis. Definitely written from the "sleep-learning works" perspective. It's a first edition of the book from 1960 -- but it basically deals with the same sleep-learning applications we've been discussing here.

Apparently, researchers began doing experiments as early as 1920. The book details many successful cases -- some based on scientific research; others based on individual experiences -- lots of case histories and testimonials. Many report rapid gains that sound a lot like Brian's initial experience with Personal Genius. The book covers both the 'learning information' angle AND the 'programming yourself with positive suggestions' angle.

I also did a multi-engine search at dogpile.com under "sleep-learning" and came up with links to a few informative sites. If anyone's interested, I'll post some links here. If you want to research this on your own, sleep-learning is also referred to as "hypnopaedia" and "hypnopedia". From what I've looked through so far, I'd say there's a fairly even mix between "it works" and "it doesn't work"-type information.

Here's a link that I've found and skimmed that seems to be the most detailed:

Paul,
That was a good bit of info, discouraging a bit, but informative. It is making me re-evaluate my thinking on the subject. When I went to this method of learning, listening to the tapes wasn't the only thing I changed. Not taking notes and really absorbing the lectures (as previously mentioned), trusting my instincts more when answering questions and just the fact that I usually hear the complete sound file once before actually falling asleep could be the primary contributors to my success thus far. At any rate it has helped and I am not completely discouraged.

I will try to do everything the same but only let the sound files play once instead of looped. If there is no difference then it would support the studies provided in Paul's post, that sleep learning isn't an easy or effective process, or at least it isn't what has enabled my success. If not I will continue my own experiments. I will post my results.

When using these audio programs it is best to use an 11k or 22k sampling rate at 16 bit stereo. A high sampling rate really sucks up computer resources and can take up to 200+ megs of disk space per file. 11k and 22k also gets rid of the tape hiss but reduces the background sounds, crashing waves. If anyone has any positive or negative results with this please post them. Thanks.
Jeff

Jeff,
The book I'm reading is actually VERY encouraging here and well put-together. From what I've read so far, repetition while sleeping can greatly strengthen the effect. Different studies draw different conclusions.

Here's a thought I've had: Paraliminals contain the "language of the unconscious mind" (metaphors, stories, indirect commands, descriptions of beneficial states, supportive comments, etc.). This information is carefully constructed to "go right in" - bypassing the critical factor. For sleep-learning, maybe this type of input could have an absorption advantage over "straight information", such as recorded class lectures. Maybe even a VERY BIG advantage. I'm not aware of this variable having been tested (save for your and Brian's personal experiences).

If this type of information is "candy" to the unconscious, could that make the difference here?

I'm still looking forward to listening to this continuously at night, I just haven't quite progressed to that point yet. More later...

Paul,
Was that the "Learn While You Sleep" by David Curtis book that you mentioned earlier? I saw it at Amazon for 10 bucks but it is a special order item, 4-6 weeks. Called the campus and local library with no results.
Another thing that crossed my mind is a company called the Teaching Company http://www.teachco.com/ . I have always been riveted to the tube when the discovery channel had anything related to physics or geophysics. So, I bought thier physics set on video and recorded them on tape. I use to listen to them all the time while I was driving big rigs a few years back. They really helped cement the some of the more difficult theories into memory. I am often amazed when I quote passages from those tapes after years of not listening. It also takes the fun out of movies that employ too much "hollywood physics".
An educational series presented with LSC method could be an interesting idea. There probably wouldn't be a great demand for it but I am not a marketing expert so who knows. Just a thought. It seems with the success thier methods have had that this could possibly be an area of exploration and expansion for their company.

Please let me know if that is the right book so I can order it. Thanks.
Jeff

Jeff,
Yup, that was the book. Amazingly useful for it's vintage. I think the "newest" edition is from 1964. I've got an earlier one. There are a few more recent books on the subject of sleep-learning that I haven't looked at.

Thanks for the info on The Teaching Company. I may have gotten a mailer from them once, not sure.

Now, if we can just get all educators to speak like Paul Scheele...

Jeff,
If you want a good condition copy of that book for $1.45 (plus shipping), email this person:

r.grierson@angelfire.com

You can get the specifics and have them hold it. I'm not sure which edition it is, but if you don't mind a used copy, it's cheap. I almost bought it, but I have access to a copy and you don't, so have at it (if you like).

Paul,
Thanks for the lead. And that is how I originally became aware of the teaching co.

Hi!

I'm new here.
Does anybody know if the tape "Holiday Cheer"
is suitable for repeated listening?
Has anybody made some experiences with it?

It is suitable for repeated listenings.

Since I have all of the Paraliminals, I save that tapes for those times throughout the year that I want something special or when things seem to be getting harried.

I know of some people who listen to the tape on their holidays: Easter, Memorial Day, Birthday, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. It is their way of making the day special, of ritual, of marking the year.
