Are stereograms good practice for entering Photofocus? Any comments?

Thanks, Bob

I believe so. I have been practicing with them a little as a way to quickly get into photofocus, train my peripheral awareness, and practice holding a steady divergent gaze.

I'm actually considering making some of my own and hanging them in my office.

I'm thinking of doing the same. I've been looking on the web for a good program. Thanks for the reply. Bob

OK, a question about stereograms.

For the life of me I can not see the images. I can do a Photofocus and see the blip page (took me a few weeks to finally figure this one out), and I aksed my wife to check that I am not crossing my eyes, but diverging them.

But stereograms... can't do. Can somebody tell me what am I supposed to see? For example here is the link:
<http://www.eyetricks.com/3dstereo20.htm> and it says that I am supposed to see a horse. Am I supposed to see one horse or a series of several horses? Are stereograms always just one image or multiple images? Should it be a 3-D horse? Can somebody who can see it tell me more details of what I am looking for? (is it just the horse head or the entire body?)

Same thing with stereogram in the course manual (p. 42). I can play with two dots at the top and make them into four or three, but I can't see the word PHOTOREAD. Why?

Thank you in advance for any help!!

It's a single horse in mid-stride, running off to the left (the left of the viewer, not the horse). The horse is 3D.

Another way to check yourself on diverging/converging is to notice the area in the room around you while looking at the book. If the room you can see around the edges of the book looks normal, you're in photofocus. If your eyes are crossed, you may see some double-imaging in the room.

The stereograms are much like photoreading. Try to force it, and it doesn't turn out well. Relax and look through the image and you should eventually see it (imagine you're looking at something behind the monitor). It may take a few seconds, it may take longer. The thing that is very interesting is that once you see the image, you can move your eyes around within the image and you don't lose it.

Stereograms take a little practice to get the hang of, but afterwards are very easy to see almost at will. One trick is to focus to a point far in the distance, looking through the stereogram, and slowly pull your focal point closer. Using this method you will sometimes see a double-vision version of them that you can then focus into a single version. Once you start to see the hidden object, the rest of it comes together in a couple of seconds.

One of the others on the site you listed uses the same design for the 3d object and the pattern. Look at http://www.eyetricks.com/3dstereo24.htm
the hidden object is a big version of the little crossed circles. When you have it properly focused, there will be 6 white circles in the forground, then the large hidden circle, and finally 6 green circles in the background. The little ones overlap the big one so that inside each bottom quarter of the large one is one of the little green ones.

Hope that makes sense.

Below are some of the easier ones to see. http://www.eyetricks.com/3dstereo40.htm http://www.eyetricks.com/3dstereo7.htm http://www.eyetricks.com/3dstereo29.htm http://www.eyetricks.com/3dstereo17.htm

One other thing I forgot to mention...

When viewing a stereogram, your eyes must be perfectly horizontal to the image. Tilting your head just a couple of degrees can cause the effect to fail.

The easiest way to make sure you have it right is to notice the top edges of the right and left versions of the image in your unfocused vision. One side should not be floating up above the other. They should form one straight edge all the way across.
