Mind mapping is a very interesting method of note taking, believe it or not. If you own the PhotoReading book, there is some information in there about it. If you want to check out more, get the book Mind Mapping,by Tony Buzan.
Using different colors, pictures, and arrows, mind mapping is a very effective activation method that can be used on getting piece by piece what's in a book. It gets more of your mind and senses involved.
One way to start is to PhotoRead a book, then SR/Dip during one 30 minute session, and mind map everything from there. Start with the center - the title of the book. Usually the largest piece of poster board or paper is the best to use.
From there, break it down by chapter. It doesn't matter what the material is. If it's a fictional story, you can write down what happens piece by piece with each character, event, and occurance of any kind.
Extend off of extentions. Play with it. Make it something you're comfortable with. It really doesn't matter the way you do it.
For a few examples, look on page...I think 68 of the PhotoReading book...?
Just my 2 cents.
