I must admit that previewing and then writing the trigger words and topics down helps me very well. It feels like more of a study tactic rather than something that assists photo focus. Don't get me wrong, I'm not flaming photo focus, I'm just still trying to achieve the photo focus skill.

Last night, I opened up my text book and previewed one chapter writing down all the topic and trigger words which eventually formed pages of empty categories with topics, subtopics and keywords. Then I photo read the the chapter twice, backwards twice, and upside down once. For another book, I just photo read the chapter over and over again for about 8 times.

When I went to my lecture today, I had a very good idea of what the instructor was teaching. However, the lecture that corresponded to the book that I photo read 8 times and didn't preview, I didn't have a clue what the instructor was saying. Also during the class where I previewed the book for, I knew the topic items and keywords, but I didn't know what the meaning of them until the instructor told me what they meant.

Does this mean that I have been doing my photo reading step incorrectly? Or do I just need more practice?

For the experieced photo readers, I'll explain what I do. Hopefully you can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

1.) I state the purpose of why I am studying the material; to absorb whatever comes in and make use of any material absorbed.

2.) I preview. I write down all the topics, trigger words, and subtopic headings, all the bold face, special type, italic, stuff.

3.) I go into soft gaze and the tangerine phase (instead of picturing a tangerine, I just make sure that my vision is widened, that I see both my hands but I am not focusing on them).

4.) I start flipping pages, but at my own chant, re, lax, re, lax, keep, the, state, see, the, page and then repeat.

5.) I scan through the text down the middle, but for some odd reason all those bold faced words make me want to read them (or I FEEL that I need to read them to get this to work).

6.) I read the review questions and try to answer them while dipping.

For some odd reason, things still don't seem to be activating, please help!

I'd be a little more specific.

This sounds more like activation. Preview only takes a few minutes for a chapter. Just a few trigger words. Don't go over the 3-4 minute time.

You are supposed to see the 4 corners of the book pages. Like an X. Don't see your hands. Dana once told me to see the white spaces between the lines.

When you are done PhRing, formulate some questions using the trigger words. Then look for the answers. It has been proven that asking questions really does wonders for learning.

Do the activation stuff in layers of 20 minutes. Then take a break. Before you start to activate for another 20 minutes, get into your quiet scene & relax. Ask about something else in the material you want to know. Open & find that spot in the chapter.

Don't let all the bold headings tie you down.

good luck

So I'm supposed to see the third 3D column in the middle as well as see an X? Sometimes when I do the soft gaze I see a invisible lighter colored X crossing through the two pages of my book.

seto,
If you see that 3rd column or blip page---that's it. Finished. You only need to use the X if you can't see the blip page. I didn't understand you to be seeing the blip page. I thought you were looking at your hands.

*Laughs* I wasn't looking at my hands, I see the blip page as well as the X. But the thing is, I still can't feel the different feeling that I get from thinking there's a tangerine behind my head!

seto,
when you widen your vision, that's it. There's nothing more to it. It's such a simple thing but the results are pretty amazing. I've even found things by just relaxing my gaze to be peripheral. Others have too.

You're doing it correctly. I use peripheral vision to help me solve problems of all kinds. That's the tangerine thing. There's nothing more to it. But, until i heard that in Paul's course, i'd never consciously used my peripheral vision intentionally. Intent and intention was a major revelation.

How many people out there who know all about peripheral vision have used it w/ ...intention to gain info? Probably not many. I was super in sports thanks to a very wide natural peripheral vision. Did i ever use it w/ a stated purpose? Nope.

Intention is the major idea here. You go into peripheral vision and then into Photo Focus and the FUEL for it's success is launched from your quiet scene affirmations & or, search questions. >>>>this is the major key here.

Margaret,

When I go into a bookstore looking for specific book, I shift my view a different state so I can notice a wider view to find the book I need. I always helps. If I was to concentrate on looking at spine title after spine title I would miss the book I'm looking for easily.

Is this the same thing?

Seto,

When you are photoreading a textbook even though you are only concentrating on one particular chapter you should be photoreading at the very least 3 better 5 chapters.

You include photoreading the 2 chapters before and the 2 chapters after the one that you are concentrating on. This is to ensure that you are in correct state while photoreading the important chapters and that way you only need to do it once.

The best way to handle a textbook is to photoread the whole book once at some point. then work on the chapters along with the class. Photoreading 5 chapters as decribed.

You state your purpose enter the state of mind apply the tangerine before you preview. This ensures your mind is focused on the preview and you can do it in a couple of minutes rather than ten.

You then enter the acclerated learning state. Here you affirm your purpose and going into photoreading. Do a short postview to help formulate questions and give it a break. Let class be the activation session or come back later to activate your call. However while learning the photoreading system I'd be inclined to do some activation before the class... just got get the hand of the system.

If you're unsure what you should be doing at each stage of the system go back to the mind map on page 66 of the book.

You can also apply the tangerine when you enter the accelerative learning state. Keeping your focus on the back of your head while you saying the chant.

Alright, so mind mapping and 2 chapaters before and after the target chapter. I remember that from the book somwhere . Put the tangerine behind my head, photo focus while chanting. Sometimes I think about other things during my photo reading and at other times my chanting rythm gets cut off and I say things like Re-lax three times.

I'm guessing that with practice the tangerine and chanting should come so naturally.
