I understand that this is a photo reading website forum, but reading is reading, so would some of you please list some effective speed reading courses! Ones that have made a noticeable difference in your lives.

1st place photoreading.

2nd place mega speed reading... my reading speed increased for a month and then went below my before mega speed reading speed.

3rd place and maybe should be in second place Tony Buzan speed reading book. This book brought my speed up to about 380 wpm. Mega speed reading pushed it up to 800+wpm however this went down to 280wpm a while after the course.

I would add "Double Your Reading Speed in 10 Minutes" by Paul R. Sheele. There is also an online demo on eye-Q's website. I'm not sure of the exact URL.

what in the name... 380wpm?! AlexK... I thought you were God like... I get like around 1000wpm sustained now just regular reading. I dunno, I felt that I can tell my brain that the standard level is 1000wpm reading and nothing less. Of course PR is like 24K+. But anyhow, good luck with any reading and any learning you have.

Yes, isn't it ironic that I never had parent to support my education nor the money to go into a proper speed reading program and I had to do it by myself by the book. Yep I gave up after a couple of days to. Working 14 to 18 hours day 7 days a week took its toll. You learn different priorities.

What methods do you use for reading 1000wpm Chang? Subvocalization or vertical?

Impressive. Have you always read that fast? On what sort of material can you read at those speeds?!? I've always been a fairly good reader but I find that if I don't correct myself, even on simple material, I'll slow down and begin subvocalizing. I have to say that the survey and the mindset intitiated when photoreading do help with that. But still!

I defend AlexK's case. Don't question his personal life, period. And as to why I don't subvocalize... I still do sometimes, it is a old habit, but do "play" with it. The counting outloud is a good way to quit subvocal. I tried that, endup just remembering numbers and some facts. Get into Ideal state of mind, ALS, and then learn things. Get more control over your mind, rather, take more control of your mind. I been doing that for 2 years straight... Image streaming and changing ways things are viewed. If you set the limit on how others can read at 1000wpm and you can't, You can never get above that goal. 1000wpm for me is like Computer stuff, History is more slow if I regular read. I just PR because I have no passion for History textbooks. It may seem that I PRed for a while, tell you the truth, I haven't PRed once thru yet. I used the parts of the system and messed around, but never really used the whole blade, just gazing at the edges..... I fear PR too much to try it. For now, I keep to try all ways of learning.

How does your peripheral vision see 12 words on your standard book line?

I'm referring to techniques used in vertical reading (forget the name of it, dynamic reading was it? I'm tired, oh well).

I can see a maximum of 5 words with peripheral vision, and don't understand how this is possible.

Well I won't say a max of 5, I just threw that number out there, but I can't see all of the words on one line in a standard paper back book, that's for sure.
