Hi everyone-
I am going to practice PR (I'm still a newb, I just took a seminar back in November and I haven't practiced as much as I should..I know, shame on me!) to help me with studying the large amount of material I have to cover for my TX cosmetology licensing test. There's a written and a practical portion; I am focusing on the written portion as the one PR would help most with.
I have a large book with 26 chapters covering a broad range of topics from hair color chemistry to the study of the skin. I also have a stack of the tests from school that cover each of these chapters.
Since I know there are many veterans in here that are far more skilled than I at getting to the "meat" of the process, I thought I'd ask for your help.
As far as stating a purpose:
-My ultimate application of the material is to be able to correctly answer at the minimum 76% of the questions on the test so I will pass.
-The material is VERY important to me; I cannot get my license to be a hair stylist if I do not pass.
I'm having a little more trouble with the specific wants/needs. It's so much material and so detailed that I am not sure how to approach it.

Thank you so much for your time...I am studying all week...my test is on Friday Aug 1st. I'm going to go ahead and begin working on the PR, but any suggestions as to how to improve the effectiveness would be sooo very much appreciated.

One suggestion is to treat each of those chapters as a book in itself. Specifically the following procedure is recommended.

Photoread the whole book.
Do one 30 minute activation pass of the whole book (get the structure notice where your curiosity gets aroused and also notice what doesn't make sense)

Take f 5 minute break walk away from the study area do something different for those 5 minutes

Now I suggest you spend 30 minutes with the chapter that seemed most challenging for you. 30 minutes and no more. Mind map or make brief notes. You may not feel like you're getting it but that's okay. This is only the inital 30 minutes

Take a break again this time for 15 minutes

In the next 30 minutes I suggest you go over a easer chapter or two if it is possible just to refresh your memory and notice anything that you might be overlooking.

You've now spent 1.5 hours spend another 30 minutes on another chapter or 2 if you wish or take a longer break.

Notice I didn't send you back to the difficult chapter. Let your mind process it for a while. Do the same for any other difficult chapters. Give them an inital study but then move on to different areas. Return to those difficult chapters after having worked on some easier ones (Say an hour or so later.) Often when you come back to it later you find it making more sense and you remember it better.

Leave yourself a 2 hour study session where you give the book a rapid read. Naturally how long you spend on each chapter will depend on how well you already know the information in the chapter and how much is in the chapter. Sometimes 10 minutes will be ample.

Mind map (even badly) will help you to recall and pull information together. Before you end you study session quickly review your mind maps to make sure that they make sense. When you start your next study session remember to review the mind maps (10 minutes should do it) Check anything that you may have forgotten or are not clear on in the relevant chapters.

You can work through the book chapter by chapter in order. Or if some chapters already make sense to you skip around... You have the last 2 hours to do the once through the whole book using rapid reading. (Parts of that will be super reading and dipping anyway because you've already covered it).

That's a general method you could apply. Adapt it, use it for ideas afterall at this point your general knowledge of the subject is better than mine
