Hi all

Last night I visited a friend of mine. He has a 19" Plasma display on his workdesk. He opend MS Word an Acrobat Reader. With it`s 19" Plasma Display he was able to open 2 Pages next to other like in a book. 100% each page without any scroolbars or something else. Pure 100% both 2 pages, and extreme sharp because of the plasma technologie.
I went in photofocus and I even saw a wounderfull Blip page.

So is it the same to read from this display like out of a book. Your answer is very important for me, because I think about to buy such an display if it is the same. Nearly 90% of all my stuff I want to photoread is on my computer. I allways print it and read it, this is very expensive and the printet documents needs a lot of space i don`t have.... Further most of my literatur concerns IT so, it isn`t up to date anymore after 1 - 2 years. I allwas nearly sart to cry when I throw away about 12000 Pages each year and replace it again with 12000 actual new printed.

So it woulr be the ideal solution for me.

Thanks in advanced for your answers

A friend of mine once said ...

"When I read, I like to feel the turn of the page, hear the the turn of the page and see the turn of the page"

When Pr'ing a physical book you are really engaging the kinesthetic, auditory and visual faculties ... a truly whole mind and body experience.

Computers really only engage the visual and nothing more ...

The more faculties you involve in the learning process the better.

Also, it's best to use your natural given tools ... you know, the stuff you came into this world equipped with.

That's Michael's view, and fair doos to him.

Don't agree with that.I mean, you have to click/scroll with using Word, in order get through it.
Another point, which coincidentally, is just what I've been doing, and that it sorting out where to put files.
Like Psydonym, I'm working with computers and also download a large amount of information, in the form of documents.I have to study many different topics, yet I had just been dwonloading the files to the same directory.
However, when I just came to find a document, it took me forever to find it, so I decided to create a logical structure. While doing this, I began to get a clearer picture of what documents I had, in what topics, how these documents related, so that I could build a parent directory and know where to best put the subdirectories.
This involved more than simply visualising, it required me to move objects on the screen, and to actually logically think about how to structure my files.
In the end I decided on suitable directories, and all was well. However, one last thing occured to me.I had nearly mastered certain documents, yet many I had not.I decided to change the icon on files that I had mastered, so the difference could be seen without having to actually open the document or changing the structure.

The young generation use computers more and more, therefore it becomes more normal to read from a computer, than from a book.I'm 23, so computers havent been commonplace in people's homes all my life. However, for younger kids, computers have always been there, therefore to them, I believe, it will end up being more normal to read from a screen, than to read from a book.

I like to sit down with a good old paper book, of course, that's up to the individual. But, the advantages of ebooks are trememndous for saving on paper, ink, space etc etc.The paperless world isn't here, oh no, far from it, but don't discount e-reading.

Go for it Psydonym.I'm stuck with my 17Inch viewable laptop screen, so if you can afford a 19" Plasma Display, and your comfortable with reading from a screen (let's face it, it's worth getting used to it) then do it.With the money you save on ink, you'll be able to afford it anyway.I might do the same myself.

Thanks!

I find photoreading on the computer fun. Do a lot of it and it is a lot faster than turning the pages of the book. The only problem with computer is that they are harder to open the page at random and hit the right spot. So Activation is somewhat slower. But you sure can cover a lot of web pages in 10 minutes

When setting up Acrobat to automagically turn pages and the process starts, what more are you doing than just sitting, going into photofocus and photoreading?

The computer is just another tool in the arsenal ... I've tried it, not for me. Has more to do with my learning style ... I need to get 'Involved' with the material very intimately!

There are no right and wrongs ... whatever turns you ON ... then work with it!

Flex, try converting word to PDF and using Acrobats features to automatically view and turn pages for you ... I've tried the word way, mouse scolling and all ... eeek!

Thanks a lot for your answers

To Michael Saikali

Of course it is a complete different way, and I also a real fan of natural books, but they have for me only one big advantage left, i can read them everywhere at every time. This is the only advantage I think.

To AlexK

Thanks Alex, you have pointed a problem I didn`t thought about before. "Activation". I`m a rp beginner, and it seems to me real hard to activate from a natural book and so it would be much more harder to activate from a screen in this early hours of my pr skill. And I also just watched out a good display. Anyway they are real expansive, for an 2o year old boy like me. However, I will try to master my skill with natural books (got 32 allready printed left for my next certification in Cisco) and will think about the computer reading in future.

To all

In my opinion computer RP has a lot of advantages

- you are able to switch fast between the pages.

- you have a permanent perfect light, so you can switch out the whole lamps in the night and the only light is the display with the stuff u want to pr. Tony Buzan allready said in his book that it would make a better learning success, if the brain just have 1 point to focus on. In this case the display.

- You are able to change the format of the stuff you read like u want it. Paragraphs...
And you are even able to "kill" chapters you dont want to read. Just delete it :-)

- The internet is full of information, there is nearly nothing you don`t find.

How I said I`m not a good prler now, but this points are from a logical few a real advantage.

By the way it would be interresting to design computer programs for photoreading.
My I will write some in anytime.

Yeah, totally agree with you.Problem is, I have many Word files and I hate scrolling, but how do I make my own pdf files.Isn't Abode very expensiv to create your own files.I went to the website and it said you can download a trial, but only in the US and Canada, but I'm in the UK.

Thanks!

PS: I'll find a way around that though

Check out www.moocher.com and www.nonags.com also check the regular software venders (download, zdnet etc), search for "pdf writer". I've notice that some have offered a PDF write for free and I know there is some cheaper shareware versions. They probably don't have the bells and whistles of acrobat but they seem to be for converting files.

I haven't tired them because I already have acrobat.

You could also consider coverting doc to a html page (it's already a feature in word, save as and select .html form the format insted of the default .doc) and open it in a browser, where you only need to hold the space bar or page down key to photoread. No additional cost and faster to convert shorter files. Anything less that 20 pages I just plant the curser at the top and hit page down repeatedly.
