For those who learned how to Photoreading using just the book itself, and not the course, would you mind sharing your experience? Good or bad? And how long did it take you?

I, for one, am one of those who's willing to just use the Photoreading book to train myself to Photoread. If the book can do the job as well for under $20, why pay hundreds for the course?

That's exactly what I did. When I saw the book at my local Barnes & Noble I figured it was just another speed reading book and picked it up expecting it to go on my "interesting but not practical" pile along with Evelyn Wood and Tony Buzan. But I was looking for something to read and figured it couldn't hurt so I bought it anyway.

I didn't find it that difficult to learn the system from the book. There is a lot to the system and I didn't apply some of the steps when I first tried it. I mistakenly thought I was supposed to postview after the incubation period right before activation. I didn't use the system that much at first which also slowed my progress down.

Everything you need to learn the system is in the book. From what I've read here, I think the advantage to using the course is that you're on more of a schedule and you actually go through a few books as you go through the course.

If I was going to relearn it from the book, I would choose 4-5 self-help or business improvement type books before beginning. Then I'd read through the PR book and Photoread my chosen books one every two or three days. (The experts here might have better advice about the best frequency for someone new to the system.) I'd also recommend keeping the Photoreading book handy for the first three books and checking the steps as you go to be sure you understand the system and are doing it correctly.

I have thought of ordering the course, but that's still a lot of money for me and the book really does have everything you need to learn the system.

If I were to give any advice about learning from the book alone I would say once you've played with the general concept of the various parts start using it as per the five day test.

ooh, good question -- thanks for asking it. I am planning on getting only the book because 1) I don't have $250 to spare and 2) I'm under 18, so i'd need parental permission to get it...I really hope this system works for me, because I'm terrible at history, and I think this could help...also the biology book is really long, and I have a bunch of books i'd love to read, but just don't have the time to! It's really encouraging to hear all these people on the message board saying how it worked for them so that I know that these people aren't just trying to sell some product -- but that it really does work. I can't wait to get to a bookstore to see if they have the book or something.

I got the book for free (except for the S&H cost) for joining the learningstrategy newsletter. They offer the book for free for that time being. I just started reading parts of the book and it's pretty interesting. Even if it doesn't give you the Photoreading ability immediately, it does provides good reading comprehension and retention tips.
