Excuse me for intruding your discussion, but I have the rahter nasty habit of being sensible at people when observing discussions .

OK, here is a little thing I learned for controversal discussions from my communications prof:

Tell the other one in your own words his/her opinion. S/He then says "yes, you understood" or "no, you got me wrong on X".
After the current state is clear, resume discussion.
