Hi Pratibha.
Well, I agree that suggesting that we can actualy use more of the brain's capacity may open more doors for, but I also think that unrealistic expectation can lead to grave disppointment and leave one with less motivation and self belief than at the beginning of the project. I don't have my copy of "Superlearning" with me at the moment, but I can say that the 1000 word phenomenon was reported as fact by Ostrander and Schroeder, as the link I have given bears out, under the section entitles "Lozanov's Research" I believe. If you still can't find it, I will put a page number and a quote in next time.
As to what I tried to learn....well, I tried to learn Indonesian phrases (and get this!) using the course produced by the Superlearning company itself, complete with music. It was an expensive, cheaply produced, low quality thing. At one point the text didn't reflect what was on the tapes. I wanted to do it properly that is why I purchased that and the boxed set. I am not happy with Superlearning or the company for that matter. I could say more about my impressions from dealings with the company but I don't want to get into it.
You see, the wild claims made about what youcan learn are sure to produce disppointment in my opinion. As I have said before, I have listened to a course on accelerated learning by Brian Tracy and Colin Rose which has much more realistic expectations. They suggest taking things a step at a time rather than than "all at once" approach that S and O suggest. Notice that nowhere in the books do you read about the feats they themselves have been able to perform!
I have worked out that, if you follow the advice from all the "Superlearning" resourses, if you want to learn a list of language phrases you will be exposing yourself to the same thing around 27 times!!!! and that is a conservative estimate, believe me. They also suggest that you start with a list of 30 words. That's a far cry from one session of 1000 words with 97% minimum recall, isn't it? Give me 30 words and let me look at them 27 times, and I'll remember them whether they are in Spanish, Hindi, Chinese or Martian! And OH the time it takes to make the tapes!
I have a question for you. I was wondering about Raja Yoga. I'm guessing that you have Indian heritage, and that you have practiced Raja Yoga. I was wondering exactly what Raja Yoga is and whether it is possible to learn it on your own. If so, what book or tape etc would you recommend?
Thanks
