Supposedly, bringing the energy up the spine and into the crown chakra creates an experience of enlightenment.
It's supposedly dangerous if you have blockages in your chakras and what not.
The energy can supposedly damage you physically and psychologically.
Ram Das talked about this drummer who through the rhythm of his instrument could cause energy from the base of the spine to move upward. Ram Das said that as the drummer did so, members of the crowd suddenly started exhibiting all number of weird behaviors. The drummer told him that each behavior was representative of an energy blockage in a specific place ... that the energy, when blocked, was venting out at different levels in each person and the strange behaviors were symptomatic of where the blockages were.
In terms of sloppy overgeneralization and ignorance, I have thought of it as bringing primal ID energy up into the SuperEgo. That is, you're bringing the stuff of your animal nature down from your genitals up into the brain and spiritual center, thus refining and enculturing the primal energy and bringing new life to what could be stale and stagnant with too much order. This may be wholly inaccurate, however. It comes from a mish mosh of various things I have read, which in themselves have probably been mish-moshes from other sources.
This kundalini stuff sounds like a taoist "fire" method. I think I like the water method better. More relaxing and dissolving, rather than go go go, push push!
