Mate they were subtle in how they entered my life but they were "Quantum" leaps. Instead of taking years to get to this level it happened in a matter of months.
Other peoples efforts are not going to provide you with concrete evidence of whether Direct Learning works or not then. You need to try it yourself.
From the lack of discussion of what you actually did in the process of your direct learning project/s I cannot even know if you are actually applying the Direct Learning technique as explained by Paul and could perhaps benefit from some modification of the method given. This is after all a tips and discussion forum and I myself have modified the Direct Learning technique somewhat to better serve me.
Perhaps you would like to discuss how you went about your attempt because... yes, it can have quantum effects. Just like putting a hole in a Dyke it's a trickle at first and you probably don't notice it but one day you wake up and realise that it's flowing for you.
