A beautiful passage that struck me from Michael Angier that I though might help someone on this DB.
"On the windward side of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the coral is beautiful to behold—spectacularly alive and brilliantly colored.
On the leeward side (the sheltered side), the coral is dull and colorless. It looks almost dead.
The reason the leeward side of the reef is so inert is that it’s not tested by the powerful roiling ocean. Because the windward side is constantly challenged, it’s always changing and bringing forth new life. It shows its best colors.
Our lives are like this as well. If we protect ourselves from risk, we become dull and lifeless. Although we like security, we need adventure. In order to be fully alive, we must throw ourselves against what life serves up .
Helen Keller said, “Security is mostly superstition. It does not exist in nature nor do the children of man as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.”
People in the twilight of their lives seldom voice regrets over what they did, but they often share regrets over what they didn’t do. You have 100% of your life left.
