Translation: the PhotoReading step definitely does something for "priming the mental pump" on the written material.

I have used direct learning - mostly in relation to absorbing interpersonal skills via NLP. One of the tricks with Direct Learning, I think, is that after you've PhotoRead and then "made believe" that you have the desired skill, you let yourself unconsciously act with the skill. What I mean is, after the initial programming that you've given yourself for the ability that you desire, you stop watching yourself (i.e., waiting) for it to manifest and you let it happen. I think that this frees the mind to integrate and use the new skills, and gets you out of the mindset where you don't possess the skills and into the mindset where you do possess the skills. Maybe another way to put this is: I think in order for Direct Learning to be highly effective, you need to allow yourself to mentally "jump tracks" and forget about the fact that you're using Direct Learning to acquire the skills and just go forward and start using them.

It's similar to what I've seen some of my karate students go through when learning a new technique. They become too self conscious of performing the technique properly that they slow down how quickly they learn the skills and actually get in their own way while learning the skills. Maybe the best approach is simply to see the skill that you want (i.e. - the end goal), observe somebody doing it (or the book that illustrates how to do it), and then simply go and do it, without trying to correct yourself at every single step. Your first movements towards your goal might be grossly inaccurate, but eventually the unconscious self correcting mechanism in the mind will start learning and making the adjustments necessary without your conscious intervention. Then again, I could be wrong.

Does anyone think that performing a skill whilst thinking about each stage of a process is less effective than just naturally doing it?

From my experience I have found that once I begin to consciously be aware of my technique- be it playing chess, shooting hoops or throwing the javelin- I begin to lose concentration and my performance declines. A case of the thinking Millipede becoming confused by which leg to move first

Margaret in the book Natural Brilliance there is a script for direct learning. I recorded that script onto a tape and I listen to it after I have completed photoreading. When I am on my timeline I visualize all of the skills that I want to acquire. I have had good success with this (logic exam, C++, self confidence, life purpose, even guitar playing, etc.)

allenhm queitude is a CD that puts a person into the accelerated learning state and keeps them there. It makes use of binaural beats. It pumps one frequency into one ear (410 megahertz for example) and say 400 megahertz in the other ear. The difference between those 2 frequencies is the rate your brain vibrates (10 megahertz in this case). 10 megahertz would correspond to an alpha brain wave state when measured by an EEG machine. The alpha brain wave state essentially is the accelerated learning state.

I agree with you olukayode. Thanks ckerins!
I have another interesting (off) topic, at least for me I hope you can be also clear on this one: Win Wenger calles it 'The squelcher', others will call it a control freak behaviour. Not able to trust completely on subconscious processes. Even after NLP courses and subliminals I still suffer In the past it probably had its uses, but now I can do without. What subliminals (and in what order) and/or what NLP exercises can you advice me? (This is so much better than the doctor's office )

Some advice for getting around "the Squelcher" is to make a game of whatever you're trying to do. In the arena of learning and problem solving, we tend to become fixated on what should be the right approach or (worse) what we think the answer should be - as opposed to allowing it to be what it is. The _PhotoReading_ book discusses the "beginner's mind", which is really, I think, what you're trying to cultivate. Try to take the attitude of "I don't know" or "gee, I wonder if...". Walk around for an hour and try to look at things as if you've never seen them before. Ask yourself questions about them. Don't take what you've learned to date for granted.

A great "model" for some of this behavior is "The Pretender" from the early episodes. The show is on TNT, Monday-Friday at 7:00 PM.

There is a lot of information out there in the field of creativity that overlaps your question. Exercises like brain storming, Image Streaming, etc. can help to develop the ability to get a good flow of material from the deep mind. I would advise playing with these techniques for a little while, making sure that you maintain a sense of play the entire time. Be a child.

Sorry for the mistake!
1. Dana is a tutor at LS. He said he often PhR's a book b/f doing anything at all. Then he does the preview step (sorry about writing prepare).

2. When i started studying for the MCP certificate, i used Personal Genius to set some goals over a weeks time. At the same time, i also PhR the course manual daily. Nothing else. After a couple weeks, i just started activating parts of the book that interested me. Then, right before the test, i PhR the book once more.

3. Yesterday i PhR the I Ching lectures. Then about 30 minutes later, i did the preview step. BUT, before i did the preview step, i wrote down some things i hoped to gleen from the book. When i did the preview step, i was amazed to see how my questions tallied even w/ topic headings. Today, i just PhR the book again OPENING UP myself to whatever feelings were there at the time of PhRing. So far, i've spent about 45 minutes.

Tomorrow i hope to start looking for material that answers my questions. I'll use super read & dip. If i happen to notice something that seems interesting, i'll note it down using a pencil highlighter i got from Levenger. I like their pencil highlighters b/c they don't dry up & aren't too bright.

So, yes, i PhR first & even PhR a few times till i feel comfortable w/ the book. It doesn't take much time & when it's combined w/ the Personal Genius tape or w/ visualization, it gets me amazing results.

Yes, i do get into the accelerated learning state. That's the most important step of all. If you're not in the flow state, nothing happens in an accelerated manner.

I have my deck w/ the lounge & lots of summer flowers clearly there. I could probably just take a deep breath & enter the flow state, but i really love those flowers!

I also should mention that CRI's Quietude & Oasis are terrific tapes for entering this state effortlessly for me. THANKS -39- for explaining all that technical stuff so well. Whew, i'm relieved i didn't have to do it!

Thanks, -39-!

That's what i also do. I'm slowly learning to trust myself more. That's what has been holding me back.

I think i'll go back to the dictionary. After alot of practice, i had some amazing success. But, somehow, this kind of frightened me & i just stopped. I even remember the word that did me in--- davit! I clearly saw it in my dictionary in the upper left side. I didn't even know the meaning of the word, but there it was.
