To avoid boredom whatthe222 I would suggest that you turn the volume to the lowest level where you can't hear the music. It still puts me into an accelerated learning state quickly even though I can't hear the music.
Of course you should be able to photoread without this tape. I can see Learning Strategies point about not wanting to have to rely on crutches. I mainly use it for rapid reading a book because I find it more difficult to retain focus during that process.
