I think what you are talking about is what Paul refers to as the preconscious processor. It is many times faster then the conscious mind. It can recognize a scent with lightening quick accuracy. Taping into this mind is the key to most accelerate learning programs. The capabilities of the inner mind are absolutely amazing.
I saw a Learning Channel special on the unconscious mind. Part of it had to do with people that had strokes and damaged their optic nerve to the conscious mind making them legally blind. And yet they were still able to tell which direction an object floated accross a tv screen. The guy scored 100% on the test.
Researchers have actually found that the unconscious mind has direct access to the visual sense as well. This make sense to me. Many times in sports I have quickly ducked when a baseball or something was coming for me head. It was almost like an unconscious process because it was so quick.
I think that is one of the major roles of the preconscious processor. It monitors our senses and makes sure that we are not in danger at all times.
