I have found that with computer programming books as well. Some use aweful standards and don't explain the underlying reasoning behind some of the syntax.
Which is to say, when reading this type of technical material make sure you choose well written books. The best would be to read many books on the subject. Some books are excellent at explaining the mindsets behind problem solving. Those are the best because a person can benefit from the authors experience when employing direct learning.
