One of the reasons I suggested an environment with as few distractions as possible, from noise to temperature to lighting and so on, is to allow space for signals from inside to come up.

Grab another book and do it again. Don't look for signals, but notice what signals are present. For example, what went on just before you got tired turning the pages. Remember what happens when you are going through the book upside down and backwards...you know what has happened so you better know pivotal points, etc.
