Miss Eggy, I suspect you didn't give activation a chance. Read the "Works on all Material" article in the PhotoReading section of the website. You'll know what I mean.
By the way, people who are deaf often have more experiences with spontaneous activation because noise from the outside world doesn't drown out signals coming from within.
