I was looking at the book I had photoread the day before and decided to look up the forums for help... I found an entry on procrastion and the excuse that my mind keeps telling me is that the whole system is scary. it's just this horrible feeling that I get when I sit down to do the activation step. for every book i photoread, I sit down and look at the book. I know what to do and all that but for some reason I just wouldn't do it. I can't figure out why I'm so scared of doing it. I know I want to be able to do it and to practice, but how can I if I'm not activating properly?
What was YOUR big scare about this system??? (in the hopes of finding my answer in yours)

Thanks
Miss Eggy :)

For me, the fears were:
- Fear of failure (I spent a fair amount of money for this course, what if it doesn't work?)
- Fear of missing something (I'm not reading every word. What if I miss something really important?)

To invalidate the first, keep practicing. Keep PRing several books a day. As your experience develops, so will your confidence in the system, even if you're not doing every step.

To invalidate the second, pick some shorter things to PR (short books, long articles,...). Use the whole PR process on them and note what you get. Then, regular read the whole thing and notice whether or not you really missed anything of value when you used the PR system. You'll definitely have missed anecdotes, rationales, things like that. But did you really miss anything that you really needed?

I have big confidence and I believe you guys about the fact that it works. I also have a pretty big pride in doing things my way and most of them have worked. the reason why I'm trying to stick to your guidelines is because as you said, it's a bit flimsy at best, so since you've all achieved whatever position doing those guidelines I'm very confidant that it will work if I do every thing right. and with practice, gradually connect my sub-c and c. to work systematically. the only problem is that something in my chest or thinking just goes overtime without me understanding why it's behaving like that. it happens every time I try to activate (Personal learning course: step 4)
I know that I'm supposed to have a piece of paper and any kind of pen or whatever so my hand could you know write draw whatever's on my mind, play with it.. and do the mind mapping thing, and the rapid read through the book and stop when you have a strong intuition to stop.
SO i sit down with paper and implement in hand, bang goes the feeling and the thinking that I've forgotten something and it HURTs. so each time I try to approach activation in different ways, I tried to do it when I'm in the mood, and not. I've tried to do it when I feel I should be doing other things or when I'm bored and there's nothing else.
it's the same thing. bang - thinking overtime hurt.
and now I can't think about activating without cringing.
that's why I've checked on procrastinating, and the idea of finding out why it scares me makes me feel like that it will work if i do find it.
the fear is Not fear of failure because i've thought about it and have tried to activate with no change
i think the fear is something in the general area. i think it's something to do with what life will be like in 10 years time (as far as photoreading is concerned). It's sort of took a bit of the pain, but nevertheless still there.
any ideas?

thanks
miss eggy

Hmmm. Hmmm.

I too find many times that I cringe at the fact of Activating. I believe that it stems from, in my case, being tired and a phenomena us men experience called laziness! This all stems from having the TV remote controls in our hands right from birth!!! I blame it on ma!!

One must remember that 'Activating' is a process using the conscious part of the mind ... hence there is to some degree, work involved. Knowing that there is some work involved might be the cause of why you do not want to or 'cringe' at the fact that activating is the next step.

Lets face it, humans prefer the path of least resistance ... if you can consciously apply the techniques, I'm confident that over time, it will become just another everyday occurance.

I'm at the moment struggling with Activating but will overcome it in time ... so will all the others that continue to ... practice.

As Paul says in the PhotoReading Activator tape: "the photoreading system is as easy as looking at which hand your watch is on."

...not the most profound metaphor I've heard!!

Though, I imagine he's creating an NLP anchor where, as one feels tired and anxious due to the process taking up much time, one looks at ones watch. In so doing, instead of reinforcing time-anxiety, one reinforces the idea that photoreading is a delight to do.

On the Euphoria program a quote is mentioned from Martin Luther King. He says that we don't fear failure, but we fear the succes we will have.

Fear of failure and the fear of success are interrelated, but not the same.

Fear of failure is the fear that you will fail, and feel bad, and others will point out your mistake, and that they will think that you are a failure, and then you will feel even worse.

Fear of success is the fear that if you succede, you now have to live up to higher expectations, that you had to do so much work to succede in the first place, now you will have ten times as much in keep up the pace, otherwise others will think less of you, and you will feel bad, and so forth.

(Yes, both of those sentences are run-ons. Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. )

Before activating, do you go into the accelerated state of relaxed alertness?

When activating, are you looking for specific answers to questions you have already formulated?

These 2 steps are also apart of activating. If you are in a relaxed state of mind, an alpha state looking for answers to questions you have formulated..........IT MUST WORK...in spite of any doubts.

My personal experience is this: If i am clear on what i'm looking for, IT FINDS ME in a manner of speaking. It is so easy that i don't really seem to find it.

The other day, i was PhRing a book & had noticed that in the chapters, one had to do w/ this man's loneliness. I went into my accelerated learning state, alpha & just PhR the book & stopped at the exact spot. I PUT THIS IN CAPS B/C IT DOES BLOW YOUR MIND. SO JUST TURN THE TABLES AROUND & LET THE STUFF FIND YOU. To think that i do it is SCARY

great answers but what is the solution to the problem?
hey marg, I'm always in a relaxed state. the only time when Im not is when there is a reason to be excited, for instance, riding a roller coaster. but still like I said I do all the guidelines, including entering a state of alert relaxation. i do this by clearing out my mind. dim the room a bit and get out or rid of noise and racket. sometimes i put on a little bit of soothing music but as I'm deaf, it's a little distracting so I've stopped doing that. (i wear cochlear implant and it makes hearing really good, I speak orally and people can't believe how well i speak. unfortunately it also enhances some sounds that shouldn't be as loud as it is with the cochlear. so i try to stamp those sounds out every now and again.)
the other thing is question thing. nothing seems specific. and like I told you, i can't activate. it HURTs. so I haven't got all that good an idea what you're talking about when you're in activating state. Are you telling me that you 'ignore the pain' and write your questions in capitals and then it finds you... how? please explain?

thanks

Hi, Miss Eggy
I'd like to add that I too found a problem of activating what I've photoreaded books a moment ago. Plus I wear cochlear implant as well - perhap then, would it help a lot to switch the processor box off because I find it difficult to block out any unwanted sound!

I think it will be difficult to concentrate on p'reading with sounds continously being delivered all the time. I tend to find it easier to concentrate with he processor switched. That's just my opinion.. So, would it help with the activation if you turn off the processor?

Hope this helps?

People can't believe that I'm deaf when talking to me.....
