All,

A question(s) that play alot in my head are very simple yet the answers have infinite possibilities. Where are we going from here? What does the future hold? It is suggested that we use between 1%-10% of our brains' capability. How can we tap into the other 90%? If we only use the lower percentile, how can we all at leaset use 10%? I know that as a learning society we are advanced compared to even a few years ago, are we still only using this small amount of our brains' potential. Where are the next discoveries coming from? Will 'SuperLearing' be reproduced in 3000 AD? What will it tell us? I suppose I ponder this question and variants because I remember two quotes"The brain is a sleeping giant" and "Imagination is more important than knowledge". Yet I always want to push forward and make learning..life..eveything easier. Where are we going and how can I get there?

Drew

I do believe that humans have uptapped potential. However, I've recently changed my view on the 10% myth. FYI look at these sites, there is no scientific evidence of the 10% myth. (just a few sites of many)

What is interesting is how the media has kept this myth alive as you will see on the sites.

Dribble. Absolute rubbish.

If we use all of our brain's potential, how can we ever increase the level of our intelligence at which we are now?

You're thinking that the myth says "we use 10% our our brain structure" and that the other 9 out of 10 pieces just sit there.

Potential vs. Structural Usage.

Further, William James, the originator of the myth was the #1 proponent of Pragmatism. How pragmatically useful is it to you to believe that you use 100% of your brain? If the '10% myth' is a lie, it's a good one. It's one of those 'lies of success'. Why? It's functional; it serves me to believe that I have so much potential to expand.

Drew,

Where are we going and how can I get there?

Try some drugs

Pyschedellics and Nootropics. I have not tried either, and probably never will--unless they are legal. But that doesn't stop me from researching about them!

Hello people, first post ever from me here.
I still got a lot to learn.

I agree with Brian649. But I go somewhere else aswell.

In my world, the emotional part is superior to the rational. Because everything that I don't call rational is called emotional by me. With that, multiple emotional levels. Level 0: physical pain, comfort, discomfort; level 1: primary emotions (e.g. love, fear), level 2: subconciusness (=responsible for controlling ALL body functions, engram storage and experience compilation, and interaction with the rational side); level 3: contact with the "higher self"; Some people would call this "talking to God". This, in contrary to the rational part, which -roughly said- only processes data, creates links and interacts, based on experience.

If this 10% figure is based on rational brain usage, then I agree. If you come to higher levels of brain usage, you come to the point that you suddenly know things. You feel them. This is the absolute purest form.

This is my much too simplistic view on these matters, but until I hear a better one, I will keep it.

I actually created a similar theory to the one you just proposed a while back

I think the 10% is whatever you think it is--science, or just rational, or integrative. We know how interlinked and intertwined all of our four main systems are: senses, emotions, reason, intution. When all are in tune to perfection, I would say that that 10% would shoot up way high.

In order to increase our intelligence with brain gym, for instance, we touch our elbows to our knees... right. Or in order to free up the inner mind, we release emotional trauma. Emotional trauma and touching your knees are seemingly unrelated to intelligence... but it's all connected. There's always a danger of being too reductionist/ too cause-effect. Synchronicity/ I Ching is much better way.

In Anna Wise's book The Awakened Mind, she measures the brainwaves of an Enlightened Zen Master... wow. Then she measures them as he meditates... double wow. You should see it, there are no bottle necks... just amazing. I think that's pretty damn near 100%. It's called 'The Evolved Mind' brainwave profile, and it makes my mouth water!

Fascinating, where do enlightened people go when the meditate? What do they experience? Their waking/normal state can already be said to be the deepest of meditations. Fascinating.

I am very impressed w/ Anna Wise's The High Performance Mind.

The brain wave structure of the awakened mind is most interesting & evocative. It is a combination of all 4 brain waves.

Some book!
