In advanced driving courses, they have you steer around cones using your peripheral vision. If there is a deer that leeps out at your car and your intension is to steer clear from hitting it, if you look at the deer directly, chances are you will hit it. The key is to look to where you WANt to go, keep the deer in your peripheral vision without directly looking at it and steer away.
Same with telephone poles, if you look directly at it, you will hit it.
