Yes i do know direct learning. And as i've said in one of your previous posts, Photoreading with manual activation is direct learning.

I thought that direct learning does NOT involve manual activation? It does involve photoreading the books you are using and visualizing your success using those skills in the relevant contexts. (Although it is okay to direct learn a skill from books you have already photoread and manually activated). The rationale for not activating books for direct learning is that conscious activation might actually hinder the natural and full usage of those desired skills (when the conscious mind works as a saboteur in the enactment of those desired behaviors).
The process of direct learning is covered a little bit in one of the chapters in the Photoreading Book (3rd Edition) and more completely in one of the chapters of the Natural Brilliance Book (where Paul Scheele provides the full script for creating your own direct learning tape) but not the NB course.
And oh yes, I hear that Direct Learning will also be covered in the forthcoming Genius Code course coming out later this year.

You can find the Direct Learning process inside the 3rd edition PhotoReading book.

It is non-conscious acquisition of new skills and behaviors directly from the PhotoReading step without manual activation techniques.

It is a ridiculously simple process, and it works. Just select the skills and behaviors you want, a selection of authoritative and "how-to" books, then Prepare and PhotoRead them. Let it incubate and do the Direct Learning process.

Watch and nurture the new skills and behaviors as they surface over the following 1-4 weeks.

Hi Dana,
For how long are you supposed to photoread these books for used for direct learning? (1 week? 2 weeks?) What about listening to my direct learning tape? How often and for how long? Or do we photoread just for the first week and lay them aside after that, using direct learning tape only for visualization of success?

Paul Scheele says, once you PhotoRead the book it's all in your brain. Then, you have to get active with it.

If the book is highly detailed, such as conversion dictionaries and especially books such as that exhaustive Microsoft Certification Manual, additional PhotoReads will strengthen the channel between your conscious and other-than-conscious mind and improve activation sessions.

Be sure to use closing affirmation statements, such as listed on page 51 of the PhotoReading book. These tell your inner mind what you want it to do with the material.

With the direct learning step, what do you actually mean? I understand that you photoread a number of books and let it incubate, but how about the 'playing as if' step. The description in the book does not give a full account of how to go about it.

Basically, I want to direct learn the skills of good academic writing - Dana, would you say it is better to photoread books of exemplary authors or of books that instruct you on how to write better?
Is the same possible with grammar?
And, will actual use and practice of the skill help in the 'activation' of the skill?

Yes it will. Tou are right on track.

For Direct Learning, select authoritative books from credible authors. How-to books. Prepare and PhotoRead them. Paul S. recommends you not do any manual activation, as the conscious mind can inhibit the learning process.

I double-checked my PhotoReading book, and it does refer you to the Natural Brilliance book for a more detailed version of the process.

If you don't have the Natural Brilliance book, you will still benefit from playing with the process as it's explained in the PR book.
