After you do tape 7 of the home study on 3-4 non-fiction, non-technical books on topics you are interested in but haven't read yet, you'll be ready to PhotoRead everything you get your hands on.
And even if you don't have a chance to manually activate, you will automatically draw upon the knowledge in books from doing just steps 1,2,3. This means you'll gain insight, stimulate creativity, and create new ideas. Similar to how Direct Learning works, too.
