I'll make it easier for you. Your first 3-5 books can be anything but computer certification manuals, high school and college text books, US Patent Law, Tenets of the Constitution, ...you get the drift. You can tear into any type of printed material after you have the basics down for doing all of the techniques.

If you PhotoRead a novel, Prepare and PhotoRead it right before going to sleep at night. Activate it by Rapid Reading the next day. With novels, you are going in to enjoy the story, and wouldn't want to build comprehension from "whole-to-parts" as you do in Step 4.
