I'll try to answer more questions this weekend when I have more time but would like to add to the Sleep learning subject.
After reading Brians post I thought briefly about it. As far as I know I may not be gaining anything from the sleep sessions and it may be that instead of performing a dictation function in class I am actually learning what is being taught and exercising my memory. Taking notes has never been easy for me, all my attention is on making sure i copy all the info legibly and coherently. It tends to take away from actually grasping what is being taught. To the amount that the sleep sessions actually help is unknown...BUT it has to be greater than zero so something is gained!
I sleep like a baby weather or not i listen to the tapes. I grew up listening to music as I slept and if I don't listen to anything I have to have a fan on just for the noise.
I have woken up from a re-occuring dream where I am caught in an arguement between two people both speaking at the same time and couldn't get them to shut up, go figure
But more often than not the earphones come off during the night and I just waste battery juice.
That site offers some good points: Let me counter for a moment or two. (just my opinions)
A. Disturbs the quality of sleep, because brain circuts are more tuned into sensing danger than processing information.
This is silly. We don't live in caves anymore. Our brain is programmed to sense danger if we live in that type of environment, anyone here from Bosnia? I doubt any of us are. That would have to be a conditioning thing. Besides if it were true then my brain is terribly neglect of its duties because I don't wake up for my alarm clock half the time let alone a stealthy intruder. I have good locks.
B. Only really work during the 10 minutes of REM sleep out of every 90 min sleep cycle.
Hey cool. That is about 50 minutes of effort free learning for every eight hours of sleep. Have Kathleen Turner (a.k.a. Jessica Rabbit) do the voice instead of Paul and you would never want to wake up!
I have seen these glasses before that you wear while sleeping that detect REM and blink a light so you can realize you are dreaming and participate lucidly. If we could get them to start a ten minute paraliminal session that would be cool. There is a product for LSC to look into maybe.
"When EEG criteria of sleep are employed, it appears that "sleep learning" of verbal material takes place only to the degree that the person being tested is partially awake during the presentation of the stimuli."
Well you got me there! Can't argue with an online encyclopedia. There are probably test that will counter this view somewhere. I don't think that the subjects are actually trying to condition themselves to recieve and process info while sleeping like us. From what I have gathered from these tapes and forums is that the brain can be self programmed for anything, like sensing danger while sleeping for example. So I wouldn't eliminate any possibilities just yet.
"Explore, discover, re-evaluate, change" That is my motto! And it is probably why I am nothing like my folks or any one else I know. It is why most of us are seeking what LSC is offering. POSITIVE CHANGE
And on that note....to all a good night!
Jeff
