It sounds like to me, you have developed the very skills which Paul has tried to write about and teach. I am trying to learn these same skills you describe. I am attempting to do like wise towards Java Architectural Certification. I have followed the steps laid out in Natural Brilliance for Direct Learning (exactly what you just described). I have PR several books related to the subject of Java and its J2EE components. Theory is, If I believe it enough, I could go down, pay the several hundred dollars and take the certification. So how then do I over come the small voice within which questions that success?
Last night I successfully played with my dreams. (first time here) I dreamt of myself using the skills and knowledge as it would apply. With Java Arch. you are not there to put the code together, but there to take the
needs and apply them to the technology. So I found myself going through the components of the J2EE environment and made sure that the developer stayed in line with the technology as it was intended.
This was a good sign to me, but its that thread of doubt I struggle with. Did you belief in the process come from its demonstrated success, or did the NLP process itself devolve the disbelief allowing its own success. (self fulfilled prophesy).
