When driving down the interstate making my 30 mile commute to work, I'm basically in an alpha state and not hard focusing on anything in particular. Just by concentrating on breathing and relaxing my eyes (gaze), I experience my field of vision widening. I know I'm there when I'm looking down the road and at the same time I can view whats going on in my rear view mirror and both left and right side mirrors without taking my eyes off of whats going on straight in front of me. This is a much need state especially in aikido when you are practicing defenses against multiple attacker. Also it is stated that this soft focus is necessary so that when facing an opponent he cannot rob you of your ki. The best way for you to start developing this is to walk around and focus your attention into the distant and notice how your vision opens up to almost 270 degrees of peripheral vision.
