I am new to the photoreading process. When I was looking through the archives, I could not help from noticing this post because it is exactly what is happening to me:

As i said i can do the preview and photoreading parts fine and i feel im doing them well but when it comes to the activation stage im a bit lost...
I find im getting nothing from the activation process and i seem to be falling into the "conventional" way of reading all the time....
How do i know where i should be super reading and dipping ? Ive tried relaxing and seeing what "Grabs" my attention but I cant seem to find any and end up flicking through the whole book without any purpose.

The moderater responded that the most important things was to have a purpose. Currently, I am reading a book called The Worldy Philosophers. My purpose is to learn about the different philosophers that shaped history, and I want to pick up a some details from this book. Is this enough of a purpose, or should I create a new purpose for each chapter?

The first activation session that I have, should I super read and dip the whole book or will that naturaly not be enough time (for a book that would normally take 10hrs to read)?

When I am super reading, I find myself stoping at random places that don't seem to have any significance. Is it that I don't have a strong enough of a purpose? Also, when you stop to dip, how long should you dip?

Thanks for posting, Joe!

Your purpose for reading "Worldly Philosophers" is good. It sounds like you might need to work on formulating more mind probing questions with the trigger words you wrote down during your 8-minute Preview. And, it's common to dip at places that don't seem significant. Count on dipping in dozens of places to get to the good stuff.

I spend 3-5 seconds when I dip.

Yes, your first couple of activation sessions should scour the entire book cover-to-cover. Remember, you're going in for structure first.

3-5 seconds??! No wonder it is takes me so much longer than advanced students. In the home study course Paul says when you find a place to dip to dip for 1 or 2 pages. I end up spending up to 60 seconds regularly because I understood dipping to be regular reading. How do you read anything in 3 seconds? That's how long it takes me to skitter a paragraph while super reading, BEFORE I even start dipping. *sigh*

Always trying to learn,
Brandon

Sorry about the delay responding...

When you are activating your book, you are working under a time constaint, trying to make a sweep through the whole book cover-to-cover in about 30 minutes. You'll dip dozens of times while SuperReading through the book. I wouldn't spend much over 6-8 seconds on any one page.

How many books have you done the whole process on so far? Just wondering where you are at with mastering the basics of the process.

The WHOLE process? About 5 books.. I've prepared/previewed/photoread about 20 so far though.

I thought the first run through the book was 30 minutes for superreading but then you start splitting the book up into smaller pieces for the subsequent 30 minute sections?

So I guess when you are dipping you are 'speed reading', not just regular reading, since you say you only spend 6-8 seconds. Yes? I had been slowing down to regular speeds while dipping.
