Hi Joe,
This question was hard for me to answer too, and I'm still learning. Perhaps a different question will help: Why are you reading this book? A test? Personal interest? Work?
If its for a test, my purpose would be, "To get an A on the test over this material on Thursday." If its personal interest I would say something like, "To extract the information which is interesting and useful to me." For work: "To extract the information which will be useful in my day-to-day work."
I've also found that since I'm a highly visual person, adding a visualization to that purpose is extremely powerful. I explained that pretty well above but if you need more info or some ideas let me know.
Mike
