I don't use the tangerine technique because I easily forget about focusing my attention on the top back part of my head when I read. I use a technique from Guy Finley's "Road to Good Fortune" tapes. He wasn't talking about reading or relaxing but "waking up" mentally. He said to place your attention on any one thing in the room (we'd use a book) then become aware of yourself in the room being aware of the book. Attention is what you're doing to the book but AWARENESS is everything else. It's like having 2 "knowings" going at the same time and neither are "thinking" as we know it. Like if your at a family reunion and you're walking around you may have your attention on various things and these things are constantly changing (the people, the grill, the food, the this, the that, etc) but at the same time you can be fully aware of where you are, your posture, breathing, thoughts going thru you etc. In other words you know that you're at a family reunion and are not lost on any particular thought train- like EVERYONE else there. When I sit down and look at the book and become aware of me and my attention is on the book then I guess I can think of a tangerine but at that point I don't need to do that. I think it's one of those mental tricks like in NLP where you look up and to the left to help remember something you saw and looking up and to the right to construct an imaginative or creative thought etc. Maybe thinking about something on the back of your head will help alot of people but if the blip page is optional, then the tangerine has to be too. If you can't concentrate you really need to practice relaxing more than other people.
