An Alpha state is like the state you're in just before you fall asleep: very relaxed, no thoughts, all muscles relaxed, still aware of your surroundings, slow but deep breaths, etc...
The Web is full of sites that sell or offer information on ways of attaining an Alpha state.

You are in an alpha state periodically throughout the day and it's really no big deal. I wouldn't spend any money to learn how to do it because doing the 321 thingy on the PR tapes gets you to it. It's just a state of relaxed alertness where you perform better. Deep "belly" breathing (expand your stomach) helps get you there while you do the 321 thing. Whenever you are doing something and you forget about YOU, you are in one. Waking consciousness is Beta, then there's alpha, and then I think Delta and then Theta, Theta being deep sleep, the type that boosts hormone levels and keeps you healthy. So alpha ain't too far away from waking consciousness.

I don't really know how you can recognize you're in one but it really doesn't matter and you're worrying about it can prevent it, alot like worrying over getting to sleep will keep you up. Do the 321 exercise while doing deep breathing for 5 minutes and then assume you're in one and do what you got to do.

The easiest way to get to alpha state, for me, is to sit back, relax my muscles, breathe deeply and slowly, and count from 10 to 1 (with each number I feel myself getting lighter more relaxed).

That's Silva method. He recommends to count from 100 to 1 when starting, but takes too long and most of the time I fall asleep. But you can try what suits you the best (50, 20, 5, whatever).

Don't push yourself to alpha, but let go and 'fall' into it. You won't feel any 'special' sensation, but you will feel different; better, peacefull, GOOD! Just like anything else, the more you do it the easier it gets.

Sokrates:
Try what works for me. Gently close your eyes and count backwards from 50 to 0. Always count on the exhale. Once you reach 0, slowly open your eyes, not wide open but half open. Take a look around with your eyes and notice the sensation that you are experiencing. You are in "Alpha" my friend.
I Pray this works for you.

Shaan:

If you find yourself falling asleep while counting from 50 to 0 subvocally, cut the number in half and start at 25. I'm glad that I could be of some assistant. Always remember what it feels like, then at some point start counting down from 5 to 0 and see if you are experiencing the same sensation. If so, you are now able to access the alpha alot quicker
