I wasn't sure where to post this, so I settled on this category. There is an interesting article at RealPsychology about visualization and goals. It suggests that the typical self-help suggestion to vividly visualize your goal as if it has already happened is not nearly as effective as visualizing the process you need to accomplish your goal.

They suggest that visualizing the result is actually harmful because it provides a false sense of satisfaction and it provides no information about how to achieve your desired result. On the other hand, visualizing the process is said to result in enhanced planning and lowered anxiety.

The self-help suggestion had always troubled me because they tell you in one breath that the mind cannot tell the difference between reality and something that is vividly imagined. They then tell you to vividly imagine your goal and your brain will make it happen. Why bother? It just got convinced that it HAS happened?

Why is this relevant? It points directly to the process employed by the Automatic Pilot paraliminal. I'll be approaching this tape in a whole new light...

If you're interested, the article can be found at http://www.realpsychology.com/article.asp?area=3&sub1=97&sub2=103&item=94

Any comments?

mgrego2,
Yes, this is an interesting observation. I have recently gotten involved in Jose Silva's philosophy. He said that when one visualizes oneself as healthy, that inner visualization is the REAL you, not the sick one.

He explains it according to the brain wave states: Beta is the state where you have the attitude of one who has just ordered from the catalog. You know you've ordered it & you are waiting for it to arrive. By this he means that after one has programmed for some health issue or whatever.

When one is in the deep alpha/theta state, the understanding is different. In this state, one's visualization of health is to be understood as already here in present time. NOTICE how curious it all is:

NOWHERE NOW HERE

From my experiences in life Jose Silva is right on the $$$ w/ his understanding. It is often said that the mind brings about our bondage & yet the very same mind brings about our liberation. nowhere now here

When the mind is turned outward toward the senses, it is in the beta brain level & time & space are a BIG factor.

When the mind is turned inward toward the soul/intellect, it is in the alpha/theta brain level where time & space are a NON-factor. I have seen people constantly mix up these concepts. What applies to one level does not apply to the other. Jose Silva & Jung are the only 2 in the West i've ever seen understand this concept.

A book was recommended to me and I haven't read it. It's called The User Illusion by Tor Nrretranders (translated by Jonathan Sydenham).

It was interesting reading the reviews on Amazon. The author proposes that "conscious awareness is an extremely narrow bandwidth simulation used to help create a useful illusion of an "I" who sees all, knows all, and can explain all.

"Yet the mental processes actually driving our behavior are (and need to be) for more vast and process a rich tapestry of information around us that conscious awareness cannot comprehend without highly structuring it first. So the old notion of an "unconscious mind" is not wrong because we have no "unconscious," but because our entire mind is unconscious, with a tiny but critical feature of being able to observe and explain itself, as if an outside observer."

I stole this text from one of the reviews. The gist of it is that the brain creates a simulation for us to experience anything. How does that coincide with Silva?

So does this mean that when listening to AP, you should visualize the process and not the end result?

Maybe Dana will answer. He told me to go over the steps very clearly in the beginning. Then when you do the tape, as it gets faster & faster, just visualize the feeling at the beginning of your process & then the feeling at the end of your process.

So far, i've only done it once for my workshop & following the steps has gone very smoothly. BUT, i have to say my desire is considerable. It's a very interesting tape.

Process or end result. Either way. I've had the greatest success with process.

My understanding of Silva is that you visualize the "problem" one time framed in blue and then how you would like it to be framed in white. From then on you no longer visualize the problem, just the outcome framed in white.

The difficulty I see with process is that many times we don't know how to get there; if we did we could often just do it. Say you have a sickness in your body that no one has been able to help you with. You have tried everything. You don't know what action to undertake to cure yourself , so what do you visualize. Silva would say to vsualize a healthy looking, happy you and let your subconscious mind work out the details.

This is part of the difficulty I have with some of the paraliminal tapes. One of them, I think New Behavior, says to identify how you block yourself from the behavior you seek. Well, one of the things I am working on is being able to play guitar better. I practice all of the time, so I can't say that I need to practice more. My fingers just don't seem to go where they need to go with the ease of others I watch. I don't KNOW how I am blocking myself. Same with weight loss. I can't visualize myself eating less or better foods or exercising, because I already do all of those things. If process worked I would be at the weight I need to be. I suspect that I have a subconscious pattern of holding on and that this is applying to body fat as well as everything else. It seems my only hope and the reason I've delved into paraliminals and Silva is to let my subconscious figure things out because my conscious can't seem to. Visualizing process seems to be a conscious mind kind of decision, isn't it....Harry

Listen to Side A for everything that could be blocking your success with the guitar. Listen to Side B to model guitarists. Listen once for each guitarist. Or once for each piece of music. Your mind will try on the behaviors, and you will automatically take on those that fit with you--this isn't done by your conscious mind. But, use your conscious mind to listen to Side B of Automatic Pilot, which will help wire in the new behaviors. Many people see marked improvements immediately. Others do over time. Listen sparingly. No need to force it.

Visualization is a gateway to the inner mind.

Thanks Pete. I'm still a little confused, though. When I listen to side A, can I just listen with a quiet mind or do I have to have an idea in mind of what is actually blocking me from playing well. If that is the case, I can't do that because I truly don't know what is blocking me, other than lack of natural talent. Don't worry, I'm not looking for Eric Clapton here, just some improvement. I don't have Automatic Pilot but I'll consider getting that....Thanks Harry
