I really don't have to read chapters like in math, I just MM how to do a problem and then do a bunch of problems works great in math. Chemistry is a bit different. I would recommend PRing the Table of Elements. As many times a day as you can. Remember go from whole to parts on whatever you are reading. Dip in on definitions subheadings or anything that seems important to you. Things that the professor emphasises the most. Most of all ask the professor what he/she thinks you should study. I think that is one of the most successful things I've done. It really kind of grinds your purpose in stone. Hope that helps you some.
