From what I understand, there are only two advantages of having a photofocus/blip:
1.You don't exactly see the words, so it helps keep your conscious mind off of the reading material and thus prevents it from interfering the 'soaking in'.
2.Your field of vision widens to cover the entire reading page.
If you can still somehow manage to accomplish the above two without the photofocus, then you're still fine. Make sure you aren't trying to consciously read the words as you PR, and make sure you can see the corners of the page/book so that you are able to 'see' the entire book/page while keeping your eyes still.
