How necessary is it to mind map to build comprehension? I have fallen into to habit of Prepare, Preview, Photoread, one session of super-reading & dipping, then rapid read the entire book. I have mind mapped a couple of books, but it just feels like an outline. Am I doing anything wrong?

Check out Tony Buzan & Nancy Margulies. Just page through Buzan's The Mind Map Book---no need to buy it---

MM's are messy, colorful, fun to do, fun to review, easy to add to w/ post-it notes

They are the glue for activation. They make it happen fast

Put'em on your door---walls--use large paper--get lots of colors---it's a gut kind of a thing. You just feel it all coming together, i.e., the big picture and where the pieces fit

good luck

It's very tempting to mind map everything in a chapter, like an outline. The key is to mind map your trigger words and anything you come up with related to those trigger words. If doing so gives you a few more trigger words, add them to the map as well. You should be mind mapping the stuff that is related to your purpose/interest and NOT everything you "think" might be important.

Is it necessary to mind map at all? It is the one step that doesn't seem to "click" with me. Is rapid reading the entire book good enough? Do I really need to make "notes" on every book I read?

It definitely helps with activation. However, it's only necessary with books from which you want to keep the content/do a deeper activation. I've PR'd many books that I felt would be a waste to mind map. There are others that really "beg" to be mind mapped. Let your brain be your guide. Mind mapping is an acquired skill for some. It's a different mindset that takes some time to get used to for some people.

You have accountant up there in your profile. I sorta think an accountant might not take to MMing right off. Figure this: Why would LS put 1 main technique in their whole mind system if it was not in some way worthwhile?

I think b/c of your occupation, you probably are doing more outlining and traditional note taking. If you were actually MMing, as it is meant to be done, you'd not feel it to be heavy & obscure.

Try this exercise to loosen up: Draw a symbol that represents yourself in the middle of a piece of paper...11X17...sideways. Then just start MMing out who you are. Husband, worker, son, your likes, your hopes, your abilities, what you would do if you had no responsibilities, what you would like to change, etc. Just let it flow. Choose significant words and use color. Layer it...meaning, come back to it. Redo it if you want. Make sure it does not look like any kind of linear notes you have ever seen before. enjoy yourself and adventure

YOu know, you can even think in a MM way. I do, so i know it's possible. It can help you with problem solving to memory.

If i sound like i'm trying to talk you into MMing, well, then you are right, i am

As mgrego2 said--- It definitely helps with activation ---it really does; it's on the books!
