Hello, folks. This looks like a very good forum. N.B: Although this is addressed to Pete, I would also welcome helpful comments or suggestions from anyone who has faced and/or overcome similar difficulties. My concern: Nearly four years ago, when I first became self-employed, I foresaw that my old patterns of procrastination and self-sabotage might keep me from producing the income I needed. Therefore I ordered nine tapes from LSC, including Prosperity, Get Around to It, New Behavior Generator, Self-Esteem Supercharger and Personal Genius (and Perfect Health, since getting sick is one of the favorite ways the mind can sabotage one's progress is all else fails). For a few weeks I listened to them consistently--in fact "hammered" on the main ones--with no discernable results. By the time I realized that they were not helping with my specific problem (i.e. procrastination and chronic low income production), it was of course past the 30-day refund period. When I asked for help via phone, it was suggested that I basically spend (when the prescribed tapes were added together) at least two or three hours per day listening to the tapes... which I felt I could not afford to do. At that point, I lapsed into listening to the tapes only occasionally, for relaxation purposes. My question--now that I have continued to struggle with the same problems, have gone bankrupt and am still limping along in the income department (even though I now have a means of producing good income in just a few hours per day, I mysteriously "can't" get myself to DO it)--is, what causes this resistance? A history of severe (in the "Sybil" category) abuse in infancy and childhood may have deeply conditioned a belief that I am "powerless" to help myself--despite an IQ measured in the genius range--but should that be allowed to continue to rule my life and sabotage my performance? I believe that anything which has been conditioned can be DE- (or re-) conditioned--regardless of the dramatic nature of the "cause." I am genuinely interested in learning how I could get the results which seem to come to others. Perhaps I need to stop "trying" (i.e. to "whip my behavior into shape" via the tapes and other means) and just simply "pretend" that the tapes are working? This (i.e., "acting as if") is, in fact, a well-known NLP technique. Would Pete or another LSC person please take the time to respond to this? At this point, I have spent over $150 on tapes and would really like to get the results which (I still believe) may be possible. Thank you for your help! P.S: Pete, feel free to email me privately if you feel that is more appropriate. The reason I post it here is a belief that some others must also experience this kind of resistance (even if only to a lesser degree), and that perhaps addressing this issue here would be of help to them as well. One thing I've done in the past, when I was faced with what I thought was impobable or impossible that I would complete it, is I would pretend that I was going to do it. Not just my mind set either, I would tell people what I was up to, make the proper calls and appointments as if I knew what I was doing. Of course if I did this long enough, I'd get to a point where things really started to come together, and all I had to do was finish it off.

First of all, to the comment of listening 2-3 hours a day. There had to be some miscommunications, because we would never recommend listening to Paraliminals 2-3 hours a day. You can, if you want, but why? Now, the first step is to get you seeing results. You need indications that something is happening as a result of listening to a Paraliminal Tape. Pick a tape, and tell me what you would like to accomplish with it. I'll then respond. I check in 1-4 times a week depending on my schedule, so be patient. As far as private emails: I prefer the Forum, because this way others can benefit along with you.

Hello again. Thanks to "21" (may I ask what is the significance of this user name?) for the helpful suggestion. Pete: as I said this (phone conversation w/LSC) was some time ago, and the advice I got--which amounted to listening to several tapes per day--was given to me in about August 1997. Perhaps the approach has changed since then. I still have the list of recommended tapes... In any case, it is a relief to hear that you feel I can get results without taking such a big chunk out of each day. Another thing the person told me is that I really need to focus on what the tapes are saying--NOT just "drift along" with them as is suggested in the package directions. Do you have a comment on that? The tapes I feel would help most--if I can get my mind to cooperate--are Get Around to It and New Behavior Generator. Money is the biggest issue, and my behaviors which either help or hinder that seem to be the place to focus. Which of these tapes do YOU think would be most effective in overcoming a pattern of anxiety/hesitancy in DOING the kinds of things which bring in income? I believe that an entire set of behaviors, rather than just one, is at issue here... A note: it feels stressful (when I try it) to visualize along with the tape when it comes to any form of goal-setting. It feels as though I am trying to force something, and it tends to generate a sense of futility. I have found this to be true of almost any form of goal-setting, as though getting too strongly focused on a goal is the "kiss of death" to ever attaining it. [This is probably due to some strong childhood conditioning.] How do you suggest I deal with this? Thank you in advance for your help on this. I think there must be others who, like myself, have a strong degree of "psychological reversal" when it comes to taking a direct approach to attaining goals. If you can help me with this, they may benefit as well. Some of us are "differently motivated." I look forward to your reply. P.S. As for the results I would like, that would be: engaging in enough income-generating activity to at least meet my expenses each month (for starters) and preferably twice that amount (which is easily possible if I just DO THE WORK). Again, focusing on specific amounts of income (as in conventional goal setting) seems to backfire on me--as though something in me is determined to ensure that I always achieve less than I intended. Suggestions??? Thanks! [This message has been edited by shinsei (edited March 19, 2001).]

Hello shinsei, I got this procrastinating problem too. "Get Around To It" definitivly helped me, but due to illness, I did quit for some time and just started again last weekend. I just used the side A, the general side every morning and had in mind what I needed to do or some habit that would help me overcome procrastinating. I really did a lot in that week and by now I'm beginning to do my work even if I don't listen to the tape everyday. As nearly everyone hear said before: Relax and play. Just notice what's happening. Regards, Jens

Hi, Jens (et al): I have started listening to Get Around To It as follows: Side A before going to sleep (which is twice a day if I get my regular nap) and Side B when I awaken. Other than that, I think I will just have to pretend that the tape is working and "act as if" (unless Pete has a better suggestion). I am at a critical point right now, where I need to do some focused and substantial work NOW in order to keep my apartment [yes, it really is that bad; I've lost two apartments (and nearly lost a third) in the past two years, and have lived below the poverty level for many years, due to this problem--so we are talking about a serious (conditioned) "disability" here]. Fear doesn't seem to be a sufficient motivator any more, so I guess a "playful" approach is worth a try. Certainly a serious "goal-setting" approach has always failed me, so maybe I can set my head to make this a "game"... Whatever works, as they say. Let's hope that something does work this time; there's a lot riding on it (but I guess I have to act as though there isn't). Funny thing: I know that if someone offered me a million dollars if only I would generate X amount of income in the next two weeks, I'm sure I could do it--probably because it would be a one-shot deal and then freedom from the "grind" from there onward. But just the income itself--so that I can then keep plodding on the treadmill--does not seem very motivating. Hmmm... I'm already doing the most palatable (or least unpalatable) thing I can for a living, short of living on residual income (which would be great)--so how do I motivate myself to give it enough of a "push" to get me off the treadmill and into a better situation, when I know it could take months (if not years) of sustained effort to accomplish that? ANYway, my understanding of GATI was that it could work whether I feel "motivated" or not. That's why I bought all those tapes to begin with--to bypass all the decades of garbage conditioning and negative experiences which have made it so difficult for me to do well. Comments, anyone? Thanks!

First, about your focus. Don't focus on what Paul says other than during the introduction. If while the tape is playing you find yourself listening to one voice or another, then do in your mind what he is saying until you can float down the middle again. On to listening: I wouldn't listen to the tape as often as you are. Side A, the general side, can be listened to regularly, but when listening to Side B have a specific goal in mind such as doing specific things to get a job. I would not make it part of a routine, such as before and after sleep. Keep it mixed up. And, go out and get a job. While money isn't everything, it sure helps with that quality of life thingy. You may have some other income opportunities, whether a home-based business or a network marketing program, but my take is you need structure that you can get from a regular job. Not everyone is cut out to work on their own. It is too easy to talk yourself out of something when you are by yourself. You can come up with many excuses that simply wouldn't cut it in a structure environment. I've talked with many people trying to go it on their own, but they have every reason not to do something. And often the reason is that they have to listen to another tape! Never let any tape be the reason you aren't doing something. That's crutch that cripples. I thinking of a guy who made decent money in network marketing. But for years I'd hear him cry about being out of work and having all of these opportunities. It was only after he got a regular job that he had success with network marketing. You know they say if you want a job done, give it to a busy person? Well, there is truth in it. When the ball is rolling at a job, it is easier to keep it rolling after hours when you work on the network opportunity. If I missed the mark with you I apologize. Hopefully, you will garner insight from my jottings. Back to Get Around To It... What have you noticed as a result of listening so far?

Hello again, Shinsei, first, a listening tip which worked for me: On the tapes, there are background sounds (waves, rivers,...). Try focussing on these if you have to focus on something. These sounds are in the middle if listening in stereo, so this is a way of letting Paul's voice wash over your mind. ANYway, my understanding of GATI was that it could work whether I feel "motivated" or not. That's why I bought all those tapes to begin with--to bypass all the decades of garbage conditioning and negative experiences which have made it so difficult for me to do well. As I remember from some thread here, GATI is for sorting out your priorities and than go for them. As I just now think, the tape helped (and helps) me because it helps me acting on my priorities - I'm actually very good in doing low priority things in order to avoid work... Considering Pete's suggestion for a job: I'm a student but work to a)live and b) fincance my studies. I've been a part-time freelancer for 3 years and for some months now tried to do it full-time. As I found out, I need the more regular time frame of a "real" job to get my life organized. With this, my freelancing is a good (and fun!) way to step up my income - but I havn't got to do it. I do it for the joy of doing something I'm good at and to learn something new. So, starting next month, I'll be back in a part-time office job, giving me the security and order to get the rest of my life organized. BTW, having had some ups and downs during my education and work during last ten years, I found that "getting out and doing something" always did the trick. Hell, I even worked for half a year for a delivery company, sweeping their yard. I got to know some very interesting people, had enough money to live and enough time to think and to look for something more challenging. And I found it. I really hope you will get back on track (or onto another track) and wish you success in whatever you decide to do. Best wishes, Jens

Thank you, Pete and Jens. I appreciate your good intentions and sound advice. So far, I've had NO discernible results with the tape after using it for a few days. More recently I have been finding ways to de-focus my attention (and mostly turn off discursive thought) in order to let the messages "slip past" any defenses. That seems promising, but there's as yet no external evidence that it is working. After nearly 30 years in and out of the job world--and more brutal experiences at the hands of employers and co-workers than I care to mention--I have come to see self-employment as the ONLY way for me to (at last) be a "real" grown-up. All my life I've been doing it for "them"--the good little cooperative child/student/employee, only able to function within someone else's structure. You could say that I've mastered that role. The fact is that my educational level and the local job market would mean that I would make, at best, one-sixth to one-third what I make at home when I do the work. So, with all due respect, I both feel and believe that the developmental and practical task before me is to learn/create a way to successfully support myself with self-employment, rather than to once again step into someone else's harness and let their structure push me along. Given a choice between earning $8 to $10 an hour on someone else's schedule--needing to invest 8 to 10 hours per day in order to meet expenses--and earning $30 to $60 per hour on my own schedule--needing to invest only 1 to 2 hours per day to meet expenses--which would you choose? Again, I feel and believe that the task before me is to overcome/bypass/transcend any self-inhibiting (and/or sabotaging) conditioning, rather than merely to concede to it by giving up and getting yet another dismal, dreary job. Thank you for your suggestions; they would be applicable to most people. In my case, after almost 3 decades of "adventures in economic survival," it is high time for me to do this in a way which both affirms and fosters true self-sufficiency. If you have any suggestions as to how the LSC tapes may be used assist me in accomplishing that end--N.B. please realize that I am NOT making LSC in any way responsible for my personal or financial wellbeing--then I will be most grateful for them. Thank you again, and best regards.

At this point, I'm not interested in whether you are seeing any "discernable results." I'm interested in anything you may have noticed that could indicate that something is happening as a result of listening to the tapes. Look for it, even if you have to look far and wide. That first evidence is crucial in helping you get benefit from the tapes.
