The book leaves nothing out.
Work with the book step by step ... when you get stuck... search the forum about what you are stuck on and if that doesn't help post a question.
Relax and play with it is the way to go... adopt an open mind... a beginners mind, be prepared to let go of what you already know and play with each of the steps let them be new. For the record others have managed to learn from the book.
mgrego2 suggestion of mind mapping will help you with situations like quizzes for history. It helps to bring out to conscious awareness the information you have read... whether you use the photoreading method to cover the chapter or not.
As Margaret said originally... you do it in layers... you don't try to get it in one pass like with regular reading... you do multiple shorter passes.
