All I can say is from my point of view, I am in my 40's, if I came accross someone who can read like that and had the chance to get them to teach me, even if they were very young, I would be totally greatful. I think you should go for it if he is interested.

For your math problems (no pun intended...), since you are good at photoreading, try photoreading a few basic math books, then work your way through Geometry, then Algebra, College Algebra, Trig, and Calculous last. I found that I had problem with math, until I went back and read the basics.
