Keep experimenting with the soft focus thing... expanding your peripheral vison that way works just as well. It works for me
The thing is if you are looking in the direction of the words on the printed page with the intent that they are received by the inner mind a soft focus will work just as effectively as seeing the blip page. The visualisation of the x is in fact just a soft focus method.
